6975313 No.6975313 [Reply] [Original]

Released in 1999 only in Japan. Only 3000 copies were made. The game was considered lost media for several years and fetches several thousand dollars for a physical copy. It's a point and click adventure-esque game with survival and fishing elements. Very eerie and dark game with that early PC game vibe. The download link below includes the game (now considered abandonware) and the translation files and can be played on Windows 10 without any prior setup.

It is machine translated. When you run it, a command window will remain open that will display when text is being automatically translated. Also, the readme notes that the art assets were translated, but couldn't be re-inserted into the game, so you have to look them up in the Translated_Item_List folder. However, a lot of these have similar styles, so you might end up reading something that you're not supposed to be seeing yet.

Overall, I'm glad someone at least did this much. I didn't think I'd ever get to see what this game actually was like.

It's not machine translated. The script runs in the background and pulls already translated lines from the translation.ini file when it encounters the same line during gameplay. You could open the translation file and see for yourself if you want. It was the only way the japanese lines could be replaced since the games source code was unavailable.

Thanks for the translation effort, I'll be sure to download and try the game out.

I assume the translation is done by hand but even then machine translation can work well when revised by hand and reworked into coherent lines, though regardless of machine translation or not it's sad people are trying to use it as an excuse to dunk on the game / translators. It's free work and a field where translators willing to work on this kinda stuff are strewn incredibly thin.

From the work I've done revising and seen from russian speakers translating russian STALKER mods, it is hard work and some things are incredibly painful to translate well - why do you think professional localizations take so much liberties?

nah but with a little trial and error it isn't that hard to figure out what all of the menu buttons do. your tools menu is sorted by main items/frogs and crabs/music scores/visual items/key items. when you talk to an npc and it gives you 3 options, the third option normally backs you out of the conversation with the exception of gimmun (the guy at the identity hall). the second option while talking to the machines at the department store gives you a list of useful information and the first option opens their shop menu.

they were translated by a human. some liberties were taken to make select dialogue make sense in english. many sentence lines in the game were split up into multiple seperate lines so if it was machine translated, the dialogue would make NO sense.

It's just DeepL polished up a bit to not sound funky at parts, but it's still obvious in the translation, like when 原想体 is translated to "protoplasm" but then a couple lines later it's translated to "The Original Mind", or when 循環器系 is translated to "cardiovascular system", or 順応堂 being "Identity Hall", or 雌機械 being called both "female machine" and "bitch machine", etc.

Though I'm not sure if the translator is claiming it's not machine translated, or if they're just being vague, either way it just seems like they're fooling the audience a bit. I really would've thought more people who actually know Japanese well enough would be willing to help translate it but maybe not. (Also to add I've never played through the game for more than an hour myself)

Well that's fine then if it's stated explicitly, though it doesn't really say in the readme file. Also I noticed the fact that the translation file is really bloated and you can tell at the top with all the "There were X "Rust Imposters" in the trap.", so basically every single item dialogue is there instead of just "You got item (variable)" being there once.

If that's how you want to cope with being an insufferable faggot who asks too much out of people, sure. It might surprise you to know that even native speakers / translators will use Google Translate, DeepL, Yandex, etc. It's just convenient, especially for basic phrases and words.

Go ask a Japanese or Russian speaker to translate something 1:1 with no localization changes made what-so-ever, and tell me whether you can understand it or not.

The translation engine just takes a string and outputs whatever it matches. It could be optimized to reduce the size of an insignificantly large text file but why even bother. Time would be better spent working on support for mapping prerendered graphics. The translation done a few years back did this and it's not very difficult once you have the basics of the engine in place.

Any competent person would use a dictionary if they don't know the meaning of a word over a shitty machine translation service. Also if you need help with common short phrases I don't think you would know the language well enough to work on translating in the first place. I know first hand how shit DeepL is, I was recently dealing hacking with a Chinese game which I got a friend to translate. And the difference between some cleaned up DeepL translation that I used as a placeholder and his translation was ridiculous.

The translators I work with do use dictionaries, but it doesn't really counter the fact that machine translation tools are just handy. If what it spits out (which will typically only be 2-3 sentences anyway) is jank they'll fix it or it'll get revised, it's just about saving time and energy.

Obviously a native speaker will get it better than someone solely using machine translation, was not really my goal to suggest otherwise, my point was that you can get serviceable translation with revised machine translated dialogue. As for your anecdote, I don't know what to say aside from maybe your translation just sucked or the project you were working on had language too obscure (dialect, slang, etc) for a machine translator to pick up on.

That's a big problem with Russian STALKER mod translations, even if you're a native Russian speaker it won't do you that well if you don't understand any zek. Zek being gangster slang.

ignorance lol. in terms of this translation specifically, the machine translation was used simply as a base. every line that didn't make sense was revised and changed. the game was played several times over to make sure that all dialogue made sense in the context of each scene and was looked over by a japanese speaker. not to mention that this was done for free and there's literally no alternative. i'm assuming you have no interest in this anyways, otherwise you'd be happy that any way to experience the game in english exists at all. the game can be understood just fine from start to finish and can be completed with little to no issues. if you actually played it for 10-20 minutes you'd realize that.

Are turds who sperg about using machine translation in any form common in the japanese game translation scene? Over in the STALKER community it's pretty chill, translated anything is rare enough to the point where nobody really complains about a translation unless it's just incomprehensible, and even then you'll still get people who will play it.

Pro tip: Use Google Sheets to organize text that needs to be translated, that way it's easier to keep an eye on such things, revise on the fly, or work in a group. Plus translators or revisers can leave comments.

I'm not a translator myself, I just do some revision stuff and help organize a lot of stuff. I've heard them refer to the slang in a mod, NLC 7, as "zek" so that's what I thought it was.

My bad, now that I look back in the chats they referred to zek as both prison slang, and to quote a member:
"nah, nothing offensive, talking in zek to regular people is like a guy from rural America talking in slang to a British guy from London, they just would consider you really weird"

"Zek" is literally just a shortened version of зaключённый (prisoner). So that stands for the group of people not specific language. Prison slang is usually called "fenya" or "blatnoy" in Russia and a lot of people ironically use it here and there for comedic effect.

Well I hope they go back and refine the translation if this is true. These days it's become completely normal for fan translators to want to avoid translating games that already have something put out no matter how shitty it is, either because they're scared to step on the toes of the RHDN conclave or that their work won't see any support given that people nowadays only want the first one available, and not the best one. If these guys are just going to leave it as is then it might not be until an official localization is made that we see something that improves on it.

>> No.6978843

>I really would've thought more people who actually know Japanese well enough would be willing to help translate it but maybe not.
The issue is that less and less fluent translators are available for fan translation projects like this, and those that are available don't want to be working for free in a niche part of the game community where your online social standing is more important than actual skill. It would be super frustrating if a tier 3 translator keeps getting walled off by another in the group that knows way less but carries all the clout, this drama stuff is important to understand even if the mods keep deleting it since it has severe effects on project development. Plus if you actually know Japanese then you're either living in Japan or you're working on an official translation project for Japanese media where you actually get paid for your knowledge. That's where most of the old guard wound up in anyways.

Translation is basically localisation, making it actually sensical for a native to understand and have it flow properly, while retaining the same message and impact as the original text. Because like pretty much everyone who actually knows Japanese I have better shit to do.

You, assuming you are part of this project, and other fan translators, do it (poorly) because they need it themselves. You have no idea how accurate the result is. Your "work" should at least have a huge disclaimer that this is an machine translation edited by EOPs.

Beginner/low intermediate Japanese learners do it (also poorly) because it takes them hours and thousands of GTranslate/dictionary lookups to get through an average text and it lets them justify the investment and learn in the process. They frequently misinterpret words and expressions but in the large majority of cases of fan translation it's the best you are going to get.

I went through that beginner phase and translated a few things years ago. Now I am fluent enough to read most texts without looking things up so I'd rather spend free time reading, watching or playing untranslated media. Competent fan translation is as thankless as it gets, might as well let EOPs have their machine translations.

the original links are down
all i could find was the mirror on myabandonware, which is called "Garage_Win_EN.zip"
not sure if the disc image data inside is unmodified...

>> No.6985582

>>6985484
apparently there is a mirror on archive.org
i'm going to assume its valid, but if someone could post their sha256s from the original upload, that would be nice

seems like only a lossy dump is available. was this how it was originally posted - as .ecm? (there is a .img file in the zip on myabandonware, but its just converted from the .ecm)

garage.exe is just the original japanese version of the game. if that can't run on wine, there's no way the translated version will either
