In my experience it's one of the most solidly put together controls I own. Like the console itself it feels like a tank

Also what's wrong with the button placement? That's one of the best things about it. The comically large A button feeps great since its the primary button used in most gamecube games, and its position allows easy access to every other button while holding it down. With the diamond layout you'd its really awkward to say, hit triangle while holding down x. Less so hitting O, but still more cumbersome than hitting x on the gamecube controller while holding A

I'm surprised sony has stuck to their guns for so long and not changed it, even though in 3d games the joystick is primary and should be in the prime real estate of the controller. Is there any Gamecube-controller not by Nintendo that fixes the d-pad?

Apart from the d-pad the controller is literally perfect, especially with the games made specifically for the Gamecube (Metroid Prime, Smash, P.N.03, Killer 7 etc.)

Small D-pad aside, I think this is one of the best pads ever. Unlike the PS controller, the handles are genuinely ergonomic - not just two utilitarian conical protrusions.

I really like the main stick too - the octo-ring is a godsend for certain games (like Super Monkey Ball - I played the PS2 version and kept veering off thin long parts because it was harder to lock the stick into a perfect upward motion (with no lateral component).

The C-stick is a bit lame, but useful enough. The face button layout is nice and the analogue triggers have a fantastic response (Z is a bit awkwardly placed though).

In addition, this has to be the most solidly-built pad I've ever used - it's so sturdy and tough.

Amazing pad.

I seriously don't know what they were thinking with Wii analog sticks and beyond. The GC was perfect. Grippy, but not sweaty, it's the best analog stick ever.

The Wii classic pro has superior D pad, triggers, and face buttons, but it fucks it all up with those abominations of analog sticks. I wonder if anyone has ever tried opening one up and just replacing the sticks with GC ones?

I will concede that the GameCube was ergonomic, and more so than the duelshock, but no more than the Xbox Controller S, which was much more intelligently designed, so much so that other than the black and white buttons becoming secondary triggers during the 360, has become the industry standard for controllers.

In comparison I have a smash ultimate gamecube controller and the dpad does feel like garbage. Its far too resistant and mushy. But my wavebird one requires less force and there's more tactility when pressing each individual direction

>But for games where one button is used more than the others, the gamecubes A button in the middle is just so comfy.
For sure. The GameCube controller, like the N64 controller, was made with Nintendo games specifically in mind. That allows for tailored experiences with those games, however it also limits the capabilities of the platform (thanks in no small part to the size of the discs as well). It's a trend that continues to this way where nintendo consoles are primarily bought to play nintendo games, and that's clearly a business model that works for them.

I find the GameCube (like the n64) much easier to appreciate in retrospect. At the time they felt grossly outclassed by their competitors and I'm glad I missed out on them.

>> No.6974226

I've got a GBA and a regular GC controller next to me, and comparing them they are actually identical. But the GC one feels so much worse in use, I think it's because you have to constantly move to and from it so you're not properly centered, and it's at an uncomfortable angle for that kind of pressing down input.

I'm not the biggest fan of the GBAs D-pad to begin with though, I think it's one of the weaker ones. Only good for holding directions.

>That allows for tailored experiences with those games, however it also limits the capabilities of the platform
And a lot of game studios wanted to make platform independent games during the 6th gen, which meant the Gamecube suffered since it wasn't the best system for those games, if they could even be converted.

But it also gave birth to some interesting stuff we probably wouldn't have seen if the controller had been more generic. Like Nintendo's own games of course but also the Capcom Five games. And on the flip side, Katamari probably wouldn't have been played the way it is if it weren't for the ps2 controllers symmetrical design.

It's an identical controller--it is the gamecube controller with a gamecube controller port. (you need an adapter to use it on the switch.) It was made specifically for super smash bros.
