So I've been replaying Silent Hill games for the Halloween season. I already did 2 and 3, and right now I'm playing through 4. I was wondering, how does /vr/ rank the 4 retro SH games?

If anybody is going to emulate Silent Hil 1 on epsxe be adviced that there is a bug that crashes the game when you arrive at the church, you can only alt-f4 from it.

This may or may not happen to you but if it does it's due to the widescreen hack. Play at 4:3 or use Stretch on your video plugin settings.

>SH1
The best one. You spend the most time exploring the town in the first game and there’s actual danger in the fog, unlike SH2 where the enemies are piss easy to run from. Enemies actually feel like a threat and it really feels like the town is just trying to kill you.

>SH3
Pretty much just like the first game but you explore the town even less. They also reuse a bunch of stuff from the second like the hospital. But has some the best scares and monster designs in the series.

>SH2
It’s great but very easy. Playing it a second time around isn’t as stressful since you realize that pyramid head isn’t a scissorman/Nemesis type character chasing you around but only pops up in scripted events. Also the first two “boss fights” (the staircase and the hallway with Maria) with him just get more annoying on harder difficulties. The final boss fight with him is great though. Probably my favorite from the original four.

>SH4
Very different from the other three so it gets pissed on by a lot of the fans. But it has so many neat little things about it. The apartment getting more haunted was cute, fatal frame 3 did the same thing but the hauntings never felt menacing like the ones in SH4. The story is my favorite from the original 4. I was invested in Walter’s story, it’s too bad the protagonist was so bland. The other SH protagonists has personalities, don’t know what happens to Henry.

They’re all amazing games though. Haven’t played any of the other expect for a few minutes of Origins. I turned it off after I got to the hospital.

Played 3 when it came out and thought it was amazing, but sorta short and felt more direct than the others. Played 4 on release and was convinced it was the greatest game ever for at least a year or two. Got me super into the series only to accordingly be shat on right after by every garbage sequel. It's tough to rank them because they each have their own unique qualities.

Everyone's been meme'd into hating Homecoming for BS reasons.

>they turned SH into RE4!!!
Except Homecoming is the SH game with:
>the least number of weapons
>the least ammount of supplies you can carry on you, you're limited to like 3 clips per weapon
>the least ammount of supplies you can find period
>the most deadly enemies
Any single mistake and it becomes a huge fuck up. Even dodging is a lot harder, for instance if you don't dodge the dogs right, they can OHKO you by jumping on your back, AND the fuckers just don't give up after a short while like they would in other games, they'll follow you everywhere faster than you, so you gotta keep dodging and dodging instead of dodging once and being done with it.

>but they turned SH into a fighting game!!!
First of all, even SH1 was adamant on giving as much control as possible to the player: for instance it's the first AITD/RE style game which allows strafing. All SH games were also huge on hand to hand combat, with more or less strong hits you can pull with your hand to hand weapons just like Homecoming, sometimes with combos too, as well as spamming the X button to get free from enemies. "Team Silent" games did all that before HC.
Let's also not forget for a minute that the first AITD was also HUGE on hand to hand combat. It was the primary means of defense.

>but muh team silent!!
Team Silent was never "a" team, it was always just the name given to the team(s) working on SH games at each given time. The only two SH games which have more or less credits with the same devs at the same key jobs are SM and 0.

Anyway I could go on forever; but most people don't have an open mind, they'd rather be memed into their opinions instead of making their own.

Makes sense, since 3 was originally going to be a game in the style of SH2 and unrelated to the first game until Konami forced Team Silent to either make a SH1 sequel or a rail-shooter. They chose to make a sequel, even though at least half the staff was against it.

>Fortunately they are all good games and all worth playing.
I agree with this, but why do you think 2 had the best gameplay? I found all the enemies to be boring to deal with since they're never really a threat especially when outside, and the cinematic walking sections I didn't enjoy either. I actually liked when they made you give up all your weapons for the elevator though, would've been better if they had more of that kind of stuff throughout the game.

I think 3 is the worst out of them all in both story and gameplay though. The story feels rushed at times and inconsistent, Heather making a joke with Leonard felt really out of place to me like it was trying to be a DMC game or something. And I didn't like the bullet sponge enemies, all the ways you could die in a cutscene, and the slurpers were the most annoying thing out of all four games. It had decent puzzles and nice visuals though. I liked that it tried to improve the melee system but it kind of ended up feeling like a prototype for 4 which had better melee and decent gameplay that ended up mainly suffering from repetition rather than the gameplay itself being bad. 1 is overall still my favorite and the one I've replayed the most.

This being said, except from 1-3-0 which are all connected (whether you like 0 or not is another story), every SH game should be taken as its own entity and trying to connect the other games together is like a messy clusterfuck where each game contradicts the other. Even SH2 went a complete different route compared to 1 as to what and why shit is going down within Silent Hill, even if there is a desperate attempt to try and connect both games and explain it all with a single easy to miss document.

Not really, the Tom Hullet canon and the Team Silent canon are each their own separate interpretation and version of the world of Silent Hill and not the version of Toyama who was the one that created it and had a different view on it. >Homecoming Story
Homecoming's plot is pretty neat, and the voice acting is unironically pretty good, esp. with Ellie's mom. Even though the MC is essentially a block of wood the plot is the best out of the western releases.
Enemy design- very "Silent Hill" looking enemies, especially mons like Schism
>>6972161
>Fighting Game/RESE clone
It's not the focus on combat it's the extremely linear level design that pushes you into the arms of enemies in later levels. Running away was an option in 1,2,3,4, and Downpour, whereas in Homecoming the layout literally forces you to fight. On hard mode I had to put it down in the hotel level. I literally ran out of bullets/health and that blade-spider enemy is too fast.

The combat design you mentioned worked REALLY REALLY well in the tutorial level's Otherworld, where you can turn off your flashlight to keep the nurses from frenzying, then high tail it out of there.

One thing that not a lot of people bring up about HC is their return to absurdism, like hearing the ocean behind one of the doors in the tutorial.

Also, last thing, the Otherworld version of the Shepherd House is one of the the best SH levels to date.

Otherwise I agree, I think YouTube/00's internet just hated anything that wasn't Team Silent (muh Tom Hulett) and Homecoming suffered from it

I still dodge the majority of enemies in HC, and I always play on hard.

I understand where the argument is coming from however, but my point is you can dodge a lot more than people make it sounds; and except from boss fights only a handful of enemies are actually mandatory to kill (like the set pieces in the sewer and in the church).

The Otherworld house is great indeed; but personally I love Hell Descent (or whatever it's called, iirc it's the long otherworld descending level starting from the doctor's office) as well as the church. They're both really awesome, and the finale of Hell Descent still gives me shivers every time; although the one story part that fucked me up the most was choosing whether or not to kill your mom. I don't care how much "non eastern sensibility" that moment has, it's still one of the best worsts moment in the entire franchise for me; and I'm not even that close to my mom.

You can believe whatever you want, and I'm not trying to argue your subjective tastes, I have never seen anyone complain about basically anything that you mentioned in this post.
The reason that I dislike - and often see others touting the same - Homecoming is that it's first and foremost a bad game, in terms of stability and general polish. The animations are very early 360 tier and nothing hits cohesively and I personally had plenty of crashes playing through it because it has lots of unaddressed bugs. It also has very little of the subtlety or depth of the originals, instead opting for a more in-your-face horror approach. In that sense, to many it felt like a horror game which was a cash under the Silent Hill IP rather than a new game in the series.
Again, not arguing anything is better or worse, because there is no objective answer, I'm just explaining the actual reasons I've seen that people dislike homecoming.

>subtlety or depth

I genuinely don't see much difference in that regard considering the amount of "in your face" gross, scary or disturbing moments the first 4 games had. This is like SH fanboys who like to pretend those games don't have jump scares to try and make it sound like it's "deeper horror" cat in the locker.
Also I think you need to look and think about the bosses designs a bit more in HC. The raped-girl turned into bed-monster in SH2 isn't any more subtle than Asphyxia.

Pretty much this. 1-3 look cool but Jesus even the lp for 4 is a slog. How many times can you jump in a hole and look through a peephole before you realize maybe there are better retro games to play

Sorry anon. I understand. But I've grown up and have to work and balance my free time now. Frankly games like mister mosquito and super adventure island 2 are higher on my retro backlog, but that doesn't mean I'll never get to the sh series. Long plays exist for people like me who can't bathe in the comfy glow of a crt until 4am anymore. And believe me, my CRT and ps2 are still sitting there just waiting for us to get back to the good old days.

Soon, soon

2 = 1 (I like 2 better but I played it first so I think I'm a little biased)
3 is not quite as good as 1 and 2 but much better than 4.
4 is a good enough game in it's own right but it doesn't really fit in with the other SH games for me.

1 > 2 >> 3 > POWER GAP > 4

1 and 2 are a toss up for me. The first game is a perfect survival horror game due to the sound design, environments and the old school graphics making everything creepier. 2 is more sad and really the game is just a big buildup to two scenes, the video tape and Mary's letter. The apartment and hospital are pretty boring so I put it slightly below 1.

3 is great I just didn't like any location besides the otherworld Hospital. From a narrative point I didn't like how they could just turn something into the otherworld instead of it being representative of Alessa's trauma. Nurses with guns and the FUCKING lurkers sucked. They did a great job with Heather's character though and she is undoubtably one of the most iconic horror protagonists.

4 used stock monkey noises for the dogs and burping nurses. Bad hitboxes to make the escort mission more annoying but the ghosts were cool and subverting the safe zone in the second half was very effective. A solid meh.

>The apartment and hospital are pretty boring
There was a server crash. Chunks of the hospital and the entire apartment otherworld were lost. There wasn't enough time in the development schedule to re-do them.

what?

For me those two locations felt the most complete in the entire game, the prison too, even though there are some rooms left out. The hotel was the most lacking location, but it was the endgame area so you couldnt expect much.

I havent played all the silent hills but is the elementary school the most 'complete' stage in the series? You get to see the whole building in its normal and hellish form.

I would understand your argument if you were watching speedruns but a long play is going to take the same time as playing the game most likely so why not just play it.

Well I have a full time job, work out almost daily, have an active social life, and study 2 languages. That already takes up most of my time, even on weekends. Then I'm into reading, music, /out/ stuff, movies, writing, and art in addition to games. I have to balance my time because it took me months to finish something as simple as new super Mario Bros or Spyro one earlier this year. That's just how limited my free time is these days. With longplays I can get some of the experience at no extra time cost. Just like I watch movies in the background for which I wouldn't necessarily want to take time to sit down and focus on

Besides, longplays are an authentic vr experience for me. Growing up I would essentially watch longplays when I would watch my older cousin play through smb3 or ffvi

I did address the argument. it doesn't take me 8 hours to watch a long play because it's on in the background. His point would only be valid if I sat down and watched the long play like a movie, in which case yeah of course I'd rather just play the game myself

I'm currently running SH2 with the Enhanced Edition and I'm getting real bad shadow pop-in. Running up to a light a shadow suddenly appears behind me, and sometimes my shadow spazzes out and jumps all around me. Is there any fix for this? This didn't happen when I emulated it.

>> No.6978952

>>6978940
Honestly if you're already using Mednafen there's no need to change to XEBRA. It's just the same kind of mission statement where it wants to be as accurate as possible, though XEBRA is made by a Japanese developer. On the Emugen wiki there's a link to a reddit thread that has a step by step guide to get it working because it's a little cumbersome.

I played every game by the original Team Silent, which would be 1-4. I played them in this order: 3-4-1-2. This was nearly fifteen years ago. My friend and I were obsessed. He always had "anime crushes" and "video game crushes" which I would make fun of him for. But Heather from SH3 was my secret crush. I loved all the games and lurked the fandom to the point of knowing everything about them. When American devs took over and released Homecoming I was really turned off by it. It was so cookie cutter and predictable like most modern western horror. Very disappointed. And it went downhill from there. Oh and Akira dont get me started. I own the soundtracks to the first 4 games. The first 4 are the best. All equally masterpieces and everything afterwards was garbage.
