Tried playing pic related with Xebra but the title screen already shows garbage. Looked at a handful of other emulators but they all have some wacky ad-hoc seeming setup process.

What's the best PS1 emulator to use without much hassle?

Ended up getting Duckstation which seems to work pretty well. Thanks though!

So, I want to play some Monkey Hero. Which emulator do I use: Xebra or Duckstation?

Mednafen is the best PS1 emulator. It's command line only but there's external frontends like Mednaffe or Medgui Reborn that give it a GUI.
There's also the versions of the Mednafen PS1 module forked by Libretro for use in Retroarch which adds a bunch of plugin emulator style features like graphic upscaling and PGXP if that's your thing.

Your post is misleading. You can drag a game onto the mednafen.exe in windows, and there is a built-in GUI of sorts.

Ironic or not, it's still better to use one computer to display to play all games for free than to use a bunch of old, about-to-fail-any-day consoles and CRTs, rotting physical media, and paying the soi tax for them.

Monkey Hero is a fringe case when it comes to emulation. In the most accurate emulators it doesn't even run but in something older ones like ePSXe it runs fine.

If you're using Beetle, make sure you're trying to load the .cue file, because - unlike Rearmed - it can't initialize a game from the .bin file

There are Beetle PSX cores in Retroarch, too.

It's been a while since I have used Mednaffe? Has it been updated recently? Because, that was always this front end's issue. Medgui Reborn is a lot more recent. Also, You should be able to use launch box for Mednafen too.

Mednaffe hasn't been updated in a long while but it still works well enough for my needs. The stuff that Mednaffe doesn't change I just change via the normal config file changing way plus setting up controllers when I'm inside the program itself.

Mednafe use to be my go-to as well. But these days, I just associate the .cue files to load in Mednafen itself. It worked well for me when I used it.
