To me NES/Famicom seem to be one of the more atmospheric consoles that no other can really replicate the mystique of even though its so simple. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing but it really makes me exited. There are so many atmospheric games like Wagan Land even though it's minimalistic even for it's console, Akira, Dragon Ball Z(the RPG ones) etc.

Hardcore Gaming 101 is unironically a great place to find out about Famicom titles that didn't release here like that, despite the site owner being a faggor. Most end up having translation patches. This is a great one I found out about there, its an action RPG

It’s not exactly a great game, but Friday the 13th perfectly captures the dark, gloomy feel of 80s horror movies. No matter how far away Jason is, you start to feel that no matter what you do he’s going to get you. It’s hard to pin down the exact reason why, but I imagine the soundtrack and palette full of gloomy blues and purples and putrid greens plays a role.

Give Yume Penguin Monogatari a look if you like those sorts of simple platformers. I don't know which wagyan land games you're playing but those are pretty useful for Japanese practice if that's your sort of thing.

Although it's a licensed game, Obake no Q-Tarou Wan Wan Panic, is a fun one. Captures the feel of the anime/manga well but even if you aren't familiar with it, the day/night system and simple premise provide a nice atmosphere

Came here to post this! The atmosphere is unbelievable, people who game this shit reviews just don't understand and are expecting the wrong thing. Honestly this game is more evocative than the movie.

I know they're all kusoge, but I rather like Bandai's licensed junk on the Famicom like that. Shen Long no Nazo / Dragon Power is one of my favorites. I kind of prefer Dragon Power for its sheer bizarreness.

I get exactly what you mean, I've only ever bothered to play the JP versions since I'm familiar with most of the licenses they got but, of them Q-Tarou and GeGeGe no Kitaro are some of my actual favorites on the console. They're simple and rather fun to try and master.

Kinnikuman/MUSCLE, and Shenlong no Nazo are also fun but part of that is my attatchment to them like you mention as well, they're pretty weak from a design standpoint.

>> No.6951127

>>6951124
Yes, they are definitely kusoge but even MUSCLE has quite a bit of charm. There's something about early Famicom games that really gets me.

For me I think it's in part how much they feel like arcade games, at least in format. I like how deceptively simple a lot of games like that are while also being rather difficult/endearing anyway.

I don't have many Famicom games, but, it's always a nice time when playing on physical, to put on something in the background for just a little.

That's understandable, no less I'd like to do the same, there's more things I would like to pick up (namely, got my sights on the Ninja-kun games) but for now I'm happy with what I do have. I don't really have a NES or most American units, so finding shit in the wild has also been exciting.

>> No.6951243

Sounds comfy to me anon. The wild hunt is always more fun, and the ninja-kun games are cute and fun.

>> No.6951265

It really has been, most of the games I have were things I found in the wild (which isn't much to be fair), which was surprising because I'm not really in a place with many Japanese tourists or anything like that.

As for Ninja-kun, I really liked the arcade games as is, and while the Famicom ports aren't 100% accurate by any means, the exclusives (Jajamaru-kun games, namely) are a lot of fun.

Mostly, I disagree. I feel like the old reviews can be pretty shit (many of them aren't even ported to the new website cuz like no one cares about them) but they have a lot of good reviews, especially some of the games that people sperg out about like shmups. Many of the reviewers are really good at making takes that you won't find anywhere on Youtube, where they actually critique the game as if it had came out yesterday instead of just bieng like "WHOA!!! ITS A RETRO GAME AND IT LOOKS GOOD (which is stupid because even back then, good graphics didn't = good gameplay)"

but yeah

I only ever played NES games on an emulator back in 2004 but because of that I've still got loads of nostalgia for it. Crystalis is one of my favourite games of all time and there was a really cool Die Hard game that was better than any other Die Hard game after simply because it followed the plot and gave you a set number of terrorists to kill within the building, that number being 34 or something with them all appearing on different floors.

Sort of offtopic but I felt like this question didn't really warrant its own thread.

Anyone familiar with these chinkshit Everdrive clones? Works okay for the most part but a few games behave very oddly like Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle (reserve your judgment I liked it when I was little), and games with custom chips/mappers like Gimmick have glitchy graphics and missing sound effects which probably can't be helped.

Will stock Everdrive firmware updates work for these things? Or is there a different firmware I can use? I wanted to check in before I ended up bricking it or some shit.

I feel like Ft13 and NoES on NES are unfairly bashed in some ways.

Friday the 13th
>decent attempt at atmospheric survival horror for such an old console
>rock isn't completely useless you just have to get close for it to hit enemies
>neat music

Nightmare on Elm Street
>4-player co-op is insanely ambitious and forward-thinking for an NES game, or a sidescroller for that matter
>game's perfectly-playable and not poorly-designed despite its lacking presentation and tedious bone collecting

I don't get why journos and internet snobs singled these games out for so long when LJN made MUCH worse NES games like Bill & Ted and Back to the Future.
