ITT: your favorite box cover art, bonus if you add why

I love pic related because I feel like it sums up quintessential qualities of what games used to be like, fun, adventurous, colorful, quirky, whimsical, but with an edge to it

Early 90s platformer covers are burned into my brain. Watching all those colorful enemies jumping around a toy world was like visual candy for kid me.

and this is my favorite, love how dynamic it looks, but it is one of those covers that pretends the game is better and more badass than it actually is

Gameboy had the most kino cover art of any system.

Something very charming about them, maybe given their form factor.

I was so mad when they turned the dawn of sorrow cover into anime-shit

The SFC cover of Prince of Persia was made by one of my favorite artists of all time (Katsuya Terada) and I love how detailed it is.

I love how Sega was so into Memphis style in the day. They also did some insane stuff at their japanese game centers. I once saw somebody post a gallery of pics from a Sega place in, I think fukuoka? Looked great. Wish I could go.

I remember seeing these covers as a kid. The art was so good, it intrigued me. I needed to play that game. I have come to love the series, though the pre cd era of games were tough to play back then. Also other koei games of the genre like Nobunaga, or Genghis. Also shout out to all those old atari covers with a similar painted style. Great box art

I feel like Gameboy games had some of the best box art. Probably because the games themselves are so rudimentary, a lot of imagination had to go into it.

It's simple, but I was always partial to the EU cover of OOT.
There was something special about receiving the game for christmas and holding this black and gold box. The lack of art somehow made it look like something that was full of mysteries to explore.

I really like the color composition here, it's dark but it has a logical nuance when it comes to color balance. The super stylized action poses also make the image really come alive, and last but not least, the super chill as fuck frog just standing there.
