Socket is a decent Sonic clone with a good soundtrack but has:
1 - One of the worst mascot designs ever made. The guy is basically a blue Plucky Duck with a power plug stuck in his ass.
2-The most annoying noise in the entire Sega Genesis library. You think that Baby Mario's cries in YS are bad? Have low energy in Socket and see what happens.

FM synthesis is hard as fuck unless you're a masochist or a genius; fortunately I'm both. it could be easy if you have someone to actually stand over you and teach you but tutorials don't make it super easy IMO, they just make it doable with persistence and grit. you're better off just ripping patches from classic games like everyone else does and trying to tweak them based on the bits of theory you know and common-sense sound design.

there are some good FM and 2612 references I can share in another post; the chip definitely clicked for me once I knew how to translate its envelopes into the actual raw index values they represent.

the classic reference for FM is this. there's more accessible stuff you can find if you don't need to understand parallel and cascade modulation in detail, but it's in there if you do.

for the 2612 itself, it is super useful to know that the max FM index is 24 and it decreases by a factor of 2 for every 8 ticks to the TL parameter. so a TL of 37 is an index of approximately 1. two ticks to an envelope rate parameter makes it decay twice as fast; release rates convert to decay rates with the formula 2N+1, so a single tick to the envelope release doubles the speed.

the rate scaling feature is impossible to turn off entirely; a value of 0 still adds a half-tick of speed to each envelope phase for every two octaves of pitch tracking. a value of 1-3 increments the speed once, twice, or four times per octave. you can notice the transitions if you pay attention; sometimes it's annoying but it sounds good in larger clusters.

separate envelopes for all four operators is a lot, but in many cases modulators should be roughly constant or have roughly the same envelope as the carrier. use those as your starting points and then add features and tweaks from there. modulators should usually have slower releases than carriers, but unfortunately a slow release can cover up a slow attack because of how the retriggering works.

the max feedback level is half the index of operator 1, decreasing by a factor of 2 for each level. a TL of 29 with FB 7 gives you a feedback index of about 1, which is extremely useful for saw-like sounds that avoid the typical FM glassiness. probably the best tip I can give you to be honest, it's a really useful landmark to work around.
