It's technically not "perfect", but I agree. However, you need it due to the nature of that mode. Hitscan in general is OP as shit in S&D.

You can choose the resource to be doom2.wad, but you can easily copy and paste the DOOM.wad data so you can have a super .wad with all the existing DOOM levels. Depends on the map; you want to keep pacing and difficulty in mind for things like that. If you want the player to start overcoming tougher enemies or large groups from the get-go, then go ahead and toss him a shotgun or SSG. If you want him to work his way through weaker threats before giving him stronger enemies, you'd want to hold back on new weapons for a bit.

One fun example I can think of off the top of my head is Eternal Doom IV Map27, which throws a group of six shotgunners at the player straight away, though they're at a distance that it's easy to pop them with the pistol without taking much damage. Just behind them is a stealth Archvile who, by himself, isn't terribly threatening. The trick is, you can use him to stock up on shotgun ammo by letting him revive the shotgunners over and over again, or just kill him right away and make do with what you've got. A nifty little trick that seems like a bit much at first glance, but is actually pretty entertaining once you realize it's mostly harmless.

I've said it numerous times in previous threads, but the best way to get into it is to just dive in - grab some monsters that act at least somewhat like how you want yours to act off R667, go poke around in their decorate files while having the Zdoom wiki open at the same time to figure out what the hell everything is doing, then try some reverse-engineering magic and see what you come up with. Start small with some basic monsters or weapons (I recommend monsters since they're more straightforward, at least in my eyes), then work your way up with complexity in either functionality or visual fluff.

Unless, of course, you also intend to make your own sprites. That's a whole 'nother monster that I can't help you with, and it DOES take time and commitment to make a good-looking sprite set. Again though, it also depends on the complexity of what you're doing - you could start by just slamming different sprites together to concoct new abominations.

I threw most of the guns together with sprites I found yeah. The autoshotty is pretty much straight from stronghold and the fists are directly from realm667, but the rest are either tweaked or pretty much re-coded.
