Can somebody please explain to me what the big meme about Yoshi's Island is? Because it feels like people are pretending to hate it in some bizarre attempt to rival RE4 haters and the "Zelda/Sonic was never good" crowd.

Overrated is the opposite of a hidden gem. We can easily recognize Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island is overrated. For all the hype it gets I've only ever seen it praised for it's graphics.
Sprite based platformer? seen it
3d elements? *yawn* just like every other fx game.
Blending sprites and cgi? ever hear of a game called Donkey Kong Country?

This shit show didn't even have the grace to be cheap for short it is. Limp dick minigames. Terrible final mayor. Obnoxious baby cries. Shit transformations that take away from the platforming to pad out the game with tech demo bullshit.

It's not a meme. Yoshi's Island has been hated on /vr/ way before RE4 dethrone it's crown of the most hated game on /vr/. The reason why Yoshi's Island isn't well liked, is because it's way too different from the other Mario games. People actually prefer SMB3 and SMW over Yoshi's Island. This is mainly because in SMB3 and SMW, you actually get to play as Mario and use power ups. Whereas with Yoshi's Island, you're just playing as Yoshi babysitting Mario.
