Most indie devs would probably be equally surprised to learn there are people actually nostalgic for this shit. It looked like horseshit back then and it certainly doesn't look better now.
It also takes more effort than pixelshit. You could get reasonably modern looking 3D with the same amount of effort so it doesn't really work as a practical time/cost saving measure like pixelshit does.

I have the Renderman I/O plugin for Softimage on one of my workstations, but not Renderman itself. It converts scene data into the needed format which is then normal send and cued on a series of machines running Renderman.
As for movies using "classic" Renderman; you just have to take a look at Hollywood:

Cool, but are there any examples of an effect/style/look that completely owes its existence to Renderman's innovations?

>> No.6932140

>>6932089
All these movies show vastly different styles in their VFX, at least the 90s entries on the list.
The beauty of Renderman was/is that its shaders are freely programmable, so it has no "signature" look or effects that are immediately identifiable...in contrast to some other commercial renderers of the 90s(one can easily identify a 3D Studio rendering from that time or something done in Lightwave or stuff done with the built-in scanline renderer of Softimage).
It also handles absurd amount of geometry, even in its earliest incarnations and it supported micropolygons as early as 1985. It was expandable in arbitrary ways, so many studios tacked on their own extensions to the renderer. Proprietary radiosity solutions for example have been tacked on as early as 1988.

>Ray tracing is making a comeback
People like you give me strokes. It never went away. It was always a part of offline rendering in the last 30+ years. It's just now that it takes its first baby steps into real time imaging on consumer-grade hardware.

>Ray tracing is making a comeback

You mean in real time? For that it is not "coming back" since it was never there in the first place, it is only coming in now because hardware finally is fast enough to allow real time ray tracing.
For rendering still pictures it was never gone.

That's what I mean, it's making a come back for real time rendering. You seem pretty dense.

It's still another item on top of everything else that you need to learn and set up
The reason for my reply was that people keep complaining that indies aren't filling niches that take a lot of effort and are only appreciated by a subset of people. Processing power and modern tools may be leagues ahead, but it doesn't trivialize the task especially when you're adding a real-time requirement

Look up realtime voxel raytracers from 2003 retard.
