You're right, but the story is already only a husk at the end of the first game. When you're escorting Yuna on an important but dangerous journey it's good. All the characters matter and there isn't any convoluted garbage in the way yet. Then the journey falls apart, half your party fades out of relevance, standard JRPG overwriting takes over, and Seymour occurs. The revelation and completion of Tidus' true quest come too late to escape all that taint. Turning everybody into generic pop music stars and then magically reviving the main idol's boyfriend doesn't make it all that much worse really.

They aren't even the best games in their respective genres on the platform, let alone the best overall.

Easily FF9. Shame 8 was such a piece of garbage it killed mainstream trust in the series for years. 7 is a close second, but by the core metrics that we judge jrpgs by, 9 is the better game.

Gotta be Tenchu 2. MGS is this bizarre hybrid of arcade game and cynical moviegame. It's decent, but it's nowhere near a good stealth game. MGS2 is where the series really embraced stealth mechanics.

Silent Hill, no contest. For the RE franchise, 2 takes a fat shit all over 1, so I don't see how the first game would even make it into someone's top games list outside of blind nostalgia or misplaced reverence for "creating" a genre it didn't actually create.

Not joking, this was the worst game I've ever completed. I guess I was too smart with my gambits, because I literally never pressed a button in fights for the last 85%+ plus of the game. I tried switching gambits off and fighting normally, but that became incredibly tedious given all the action happening around you.
