Actually he said Jet Set Willy doesn't classify as a Metroidvania at all, but better games later would grow from similar ideas. If Metroidvania is the plant that bloomed, then Jet Set Willy is the manure-- not required, completely stinks, and makes you want to vomit the closer you get to it.

That's not a good thing, as the term is retarded. Instead of "Metroid(-)like", since SOTN was also emulating the gameplay of Metroid (etc), he created this absurdly clunky abomintation. Since Metroid seems to not be the first game with a sidescrolling open-world either (much less SOTN being the first sidescrolling open-world action RPG), "mazelike" or something similar would also be appropriate.
