You know what, it worked. You could in fact hold the controller and not suffer terrible agony as if by a wizard's curse. The textures were blurry everywhere but at least they could do straight lines and didn't wobble. The N64 was the 5th gen console whose 3D graphics were genuinely functional in a basic sense.

It's a shame about no discs, but what it generally cut into was whether a game could have CD audio, not whether the game could be played or look acceptable. CD loads were a menace at the time with how slow they were and how little could be loaded into RAM in one go.

I could complain about RPGs or smaller library but N64 didn't lack quality games.

The 64 library is a joke. Yes, these games were praised when they came out but mostly by Nintendo fans and casual gamers. Just the fact that they were getting 3D right before the other two consoles was enough for most people. Since then, the console's popularity has been held up by those who grew up with it and refuse to let it go. I bet you still reminisce about the first time you ran around Peach's Castle and thought games couldn't get any better than this, right?

The truth is, just like highly reviewed games today (last of us, God of war, etc) they were always mediocre at best.

>Mistakes were made.
What mistakes? Nintendo saw an opportunity of taking gaming to the next level and even matching high-end PCs with Voodoo cards and they took it. Don't count the bottlenecks of the N64 as "mistakes", the engineers knew there were bottlenecks but were attempting to keep costs down on what was originally a supercomputer - the SGI workstation. The reason why things went south is because cartridge prices didn't fall as had been expected and coding the machine turned out to be harder than expected. Life is about balancing risk with potential rewards. They took a risk with the Wii and it turned out a spectacular success.

What's more when thing started to go south Nintendo didn't abandon their fans and rush out a new console or add-on like Sega, for whatever Nintendo fucked up they didn't ask their fans to pay for it. They stuck with the console and made sure it kept producing AAA titles like Perfect Dark or CBFD well into the 2000s.

Saturn got some really good Capcom/SNK fighting ports, and PS1 has SOTN I guess (which has a lot of divisive opinions due to changing the style of Castlevania, making it more abut exploration/RPG rather than action-platforming), but in general, if your thing is 2D, stay in 3rd and 4th gen.

You can't look at this from the lens of the modern day tech we have grown accustomed to.

This was groundbreaking when it game out, it was a landmark in gaming technology. For many of us, this was the first time we had seen graphics of this magnitude.

The devs for the console had nothing to go off of, they did their best, and their best paved the way for future generations of gaming.

Yeah, the N64 has aged poorly in comparison to other consoles that were more refined in their craft (example, SNES hasn't aged a day).

The console wasn't a mistake, and neither was the use of flash memory instead of optical. Flash memory is way faster and is appropriate for the games Nintendo wanted on their console.

I do agree that playing it these days is a clunky experience that I no longer enjoy, but I remember it for what it was, and I can pay my respects. Luckily most of the best games have been remastered.

You know, I've been a huge nintendo fan my whole life. I've had every Nintendo console and handheld, except Wii U (i even had a virtual boy) out of them all; N64 was the ONE console by big N that I flat out didn't like at all.

It had some good games, but not enough. Most of the best and most fun games that gen were on all 3 other major competing platforms (I include PC in this statement) and I feel like some big nintendo properties made a really awkward transition to 3D. Not only that, but sticking to carts during the industry wide move to 3D was just stupid. It cornered them a lot of times and prevented them from having high quality sound and textures, along with shorter games across the board.

I also laugh when people try and say N64 was the best console ever or that Mario 64 is the best platformer ever. It exemplifies to me that these fools just never played enough other games to know any better.
