most people don't know this but when you game over in mario you go back to level 1. so if you are on level 30 and already killed 7 bowsers but slip off the edge for the third time, you go all the way back to the start. to this day fewer than 1000 people have ever beaten mario

I beat this the other day using the mini NES, and save states got me through some of the more ridiculous levels. Mainly the Hammer Bros and the Bowser bits.

Colour me a shmuck, but apart from Mario 3 I just can't beat any of the NES games without cheating. They're difficult and I don't have that spare time.

Kirby's Adventure is a baby game. Bubble Bobble is also baby tier but you will have zero fun so why bother? Mega Man 2 is pretty forgiving. Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania give you infinite continues. If you don't feel like playing these in one sitting, just save and pick up where you left off. I don't consider this cheating. Castlevania 2 is supposedly easy but kind of cryptic. Zelda is pretty easy and there's a world map in the instruction manual so looking at a map is not cheating. Final Fantasy is just grind until you win. Super Mario 1 is at least a short game.

Probably the only game that couldn't reasonably be beat with enough patience is Ghosts 'n' Goblins. Super C is a pretty hard game. I don't think mortals can beat Donkey Kong, Pacman or Galaga. Dr. Mario is a brainlet filter.

You ever wonder how many people actually played the entire game instead of just skipping levels with the warp pipes? SMB1 is unironically harder than people give it credit for.

Hammer Bros can be tough, but once you learn how to handle them they aren't a big deal. And if you're using warps too you won't need to see them besides in World 8.

Most people that did know this knew that mario, and other early NES games let you continue from where you left off by holding a one button or another down as you start a new game.

You can also reach world 8 in a matter of minutes if you know where 2 warp pipes are.

>> No.6916882

>>6916859
sure but beating mario *that* way is basically cheating. I wouldn't say I beat mario unless I did every level, all in one go.

I legit couldn't beat Amazing Mirror. I got near the end and couldn't figure out which power to use where and the maze like maps meant I just kept running in circles not knowing where to go.

So what's stopping you from adding those arbitrary rules onto other games?

Banjo kazooie gives you game over screen if you save and quit. If that means you're expected to play the whole game all in one go too, then I'd say it's a lot lot harder than mario.

>> No.6916960

>>6916941
how is it an arbitrary rule? it's playing all the levels

>> No.6916969

>>6916960
You can still play all the levels if you continue after the game over screen, but you said that way was cheating.

>> No.6916971

>>6916882
I'd still call it beating the game if you used warps, you're just using secret hidden areas. I don't see it as any different than beating Mario World faster by taking Star Road to Bowser. It's a different way/category of beating the game, but it still counts as beating it.

>> No.6916973

>>6916941
SMB is a lot closer philosophically to an arcade game than Banjo Kazooie is. If the other anon considers continuing in SMB a cheat code then it makes sense to consider a full run-through more legitimate.

>> No.6916990

>>6916969
I said it feels like cheating. there's no real challenge when you have infinite attempts at it. it's just a slower way of save scumming

>> No.6917034

It feels more like cheating in SMB compared to something like Castlevania because the method for continuing feels hidden like a cheat code. If they put a menu in like Mario 2 JP people would probably consider it more legit.

>When you game over in Mario you go back to level 1
But if you hold A while you restart you go back to the last world you were playing
>sure but that way is basically cheating

So for some reason, Mario 1's game over screen means you have to ignore any other game features that let you continue, but with other games, reaching a game over screen is just fine.

Do you want to keep going with this? or do you just want to admit you didn't know Mario 1 had a continue feature?

I just don't see how it's different than using a cheat code or save states. obviously you are making a big deal about this because you know you can't beat mario legitmately

I don't see it in the manual either, at least not the English one. That's one possible piece of evidence that it's more of a hidden feature.
