Shenmue was way ahead of its time. Way too brilliant. Too bad 3 was a mess.

I've heard III is just if a Dreamcast game were made for a modern platform and I am ready to scream in your face if you tell me I'm wasting my time trying to play it in spite of that.

It ends on a cliffhanger and doesn't add much to the overall plot.

>I've heard III is just if a Dreamcast game were made for a modern platform
It's more like a modern game made by someone who hasn't played anything after Shenmue released 20 years ago, which Yu Suzuki admitted to. It's like he tried make a Shenmue game based on how he remembers it combined with what he's heard Yakuza is like, but without actually playing it.

Soul/soulless niggers are annoying, but Shenmue 3 really can best described as soulless. It really looks like no effort was put into it.

>soulless

Not feeling that at all. I've played about 6 hours and it just feels like what Shenmue 3 would be like if they'd made it a few years after 2. Although I haven't played 1 or 2 in years so maybe I'm misremembering.

You are misremembering. Replay 1 and 2 just to see how aimless and plodding 3 is.

Guy makes arcade games all of his. He decides to make a Japan sim. it was an interesting idea, but disappointing.

It's annoying when people say "Yakuza is just like Shenmue, only better", when fundamentally they are two competently different types of games. I guess you can make some argument that there is a little bit of Shenmue DNA in Yakuza. The shops, the playable arcade games, even the character animation in Yakuza reminds me of Shemue in some ways. But Yakuza is basically a River City Ransom clone with some light RPG elements and a fighting engine that was derived from SpikeOut. The "Yakuza headquarters" act like boss dungeons. Shenmue is a real world simulator, everything functions on a calendar system and changes accordingly to the time of day/ season of the year. The game is trying to create a snow-globe like day-by-day simulation. Time is one of the gameplay elements of Shenmue. While Yakuza has a static gameplay system of completing chapters through objectives. The fighting engine (for the originals) came from Virtua Fighter, mainly.

>SpikeOut

I remember when SpikeOut was one of the first games announced for the Dreamcast. But it never came out. I loved Final Edition in the arcades:

But there is BattleStreet for the Xbox.

Yakuza is /vr/ approved now. At least the first two games are, anyway. Also, the PS2 originals are better than the Kiwami remakes.

it was the DCs Earthbound. Quintessential "you had to be there" game that wasn't actually good but interesting enough for it's time that nostalgia has fueled it's following to this day

I wasn't a fan of all the retconing that took place and shoehorning in characters from later games.

I really wish they went ahead with the remake that they were planning on like what Digital Foundry found out but it's such a shame it never happened, the series kind of deserved it. Also, 3's main problem was how stunted and a bit poorly done Bailu Village was. It was big but there were too many conveniences like arcades and etc. that didn't feel like pre-modernization China and the plot moved way too little in that village when so much more could've happened there when Ryo's dad trained there and we didn't even get that much background on the situation before Naiowu. But it's not a complete loss, the plot did move where the Phoenix mirror is now not in Ryo's possession and Shenhua's dad revealed who Lan Di really was as the son of a comrade of his father.
