Do you simply beat your games or do you go the extra mile to complete them, anon?

Depends on the game

I just watch longplays on youtube.

Mostly just beat. The bulk of games don't make it worth it to 100%.

Hell, if a game becomes too much of a slog I'll probably just put it down and forget about it entirely.

It depends, for some games I go for the 100% status but otherwise I'll beat it to a point where I'm satisfied and stop. In most Pokemon games I catch all the monsters you can find in any route, dungeon etc. but I won't necessarily go out of my way to trade and evolve shit to finish the dex. I get close but never complete it, closest was about 450 back in the DPPt days

Generally complete, unless the criteria for completion is unreasonable.

A lot of these Nintendo games are built to optimize time spent rather than time enjoyed. Pokemon, Mario, whatever you don't need to do absolutely everything. There's a lot of padding, little enjoyable content to be discovered off the beaten path or by doing absolutely fucking everything. If anything you'll enjoy more of your time not obsessing over these details. Armor in a Mega Man X game? Fun to get, often little challenges in itself and expand the game play options nicely. All stars in Mario 64? A way to encourage people to buy, not rent.

>All stars in Mario 64? A way to encourage people to buy, not rent.

This is wrong. You're thinking purely from the philosophy of places where renting was a thing which was the minority. Sure, some things were done to encourage "buy rather than rent", but they were usually modifications, not base design elements from the original version.

The stars in Mario64 are there because reviewers started to really care about the "price vs play time" ratio back then, mostly. It's also there for kids who'd get one game a year actually had something new to do for the longest time and to cater to autism audiances.

Gen 3 and gen 4 were both horrible for this, you had to play most of the 5 gba games and 2 gc games plus transfer them 6 at a time to the DS via the shitty pal park. Not to mention you had to do all the time waster bullshit in the DS games, and play through spinoffs to get Manaphy and shit, the online giveaways, etc. That shit was such a waste of time.

I don't even beat most games I play, much less complete

Depends. There's a difference between completing all quests, and just finding all instances of dumb object X.

Depends op, sometimes I really like a game so it is meaningful, but other times I just want to reach the ending. Often times the games I go back and 100% are the ones that I couldn't beat or couldn't 100% as a kid.
