Are they the ones who first used this isometric style (I think they had a name for their engine, Filmation maybe?) on Spectrum that several of their games and many imitators also used? It is probably one of the most striking perspectives used in Spectrum games, it works well for the hardware.

If you want to know why the American computer industry and games were the way they were, the answer had a lot to do with the Cold War. The IT industry was heavily in bed with the Department of Defense back then and in the 1960s, it started being required that engineering students take a computer programming course. They played a lot of simulation and adventure games on mainframes and minicomputers at college and when the early microcomputers arrived, the first and obvious thing they did was to port those games to them.

Remember how this had an intro in the manual discussing the superiority of free market economics against gommunism? Yeah a lot of these games were secretly US government psy ops to train kids about fighter jets and stuff in case World War III happened.

>In an attempt to prevent the flood of low quality games that afflicted the Atari 2600, Nintendo of America imposed strict licensing and content guidelines on NES developers. These included the following:

>*A proper studio with an office
>*At least $100k in funds
>*All games must be completed and able to be finished by the player with no fatal bugs
>*All games must have a title screen and the Start button used to start the game
>*All games should have a "normal" control scheme such as A to fire, Start to pause, and Select to open menus
>*Developers should avoid putting health or status bars in the extreme top or bottom of the screen as some TVs may cut off the image
>*Programmers should avoid using exploits or unusual coding methods as they may break compatibility with some hardware revisions of the console or possibly damage hardware
>*All games must have a pause feature
>*All games must adhere to Nintendo's content guidelines:
>*Games shall not include religious or political content, obscene or profane dialog, graphic violence, blood, or other distressing imagery, nudity, sexual references, or depictions of such, explicit mentions of death or dying, or any inferrence of substance abuse
>*Scenes of death or dead bodies shall not be depicted. When the player or enemies die, they should simply disappear from the screen
>*Unarmed or civilian NPCs may not be attacked or killed by the player
>*The publisher may put out a maximum of five games a year

I don't know if these rules would have necessarily prevented crappy arcade ports. It was more that the game was properly completed, wouldn't crash, and didn't have offensive content in it. For example you wouldn't have stuff happen like the Atari 7800 Impossible Mission where it literally had a bug in it preventing the game from being beaten.

And yeah, it wasn't rare to see computer games on the Spectrum and other systems which had no actual ending or would just crash at a certain point due to inadequate playtesting or else the programmer dgaf because he never thought anyone would get that far in the game anyway.

>*Programmers should avoid using exploits or unusual coding methods as they may break compatibility with some hardware revisions of the console or possibly damage hardware

Think Paperboy and Montezuma's Revenge on the Master System. These games used a weird technique for reading the controller and if you had a MD with the Power Base, you need an actual Master System controller as they won't work with the MD ones.

Obviously the NES had its turkeys, but those rules were good for the industry at the time. The crash was a real thing that happened because of the wild west nature of the Atari, which as you say, happened on the micros. Nintendo definitely raised the bar, although the cost of producing a run of cartridges was probably the biggest barrier to entry.

>> No.6916093

>>6916059
Thus why Tengen and EA and whatnot wanted to get around those rules. Nintendo required cartridges to be ordered in multiples of 10k units and they would get 50% of the profits from game sales. You had to wait something like two months for the cartridges to arrive from Japan and many publishers didn't even bother with more than one run of a game unless it was really a big seller like TMNT or Bases Loaded.

Devs like Tengen wanted control of their own cartridge production, they wanted to decide for themselves how many units would be manufactured and they'd get all the profits to themselves. And use their own mappers which Nintendo didn't allow outside Japan.

Also another amusing footnote is that those black shell Tengen NES carts have exclusively American-made components in them (Motorola was one of their big suppliers). They never bought Japanese components because no Japanese electronics manufacturer was going to risk selling them ROMs or whatnot and piss off Nintendo.

>> No.6916121

I always thought it was a mistake that Nintendo didn't have a consumer dev kit. The Famicom had a keyboard peripheral and they could have easily bundled it with a beefed up cart for the same price as a system.

Their official dev kits were fairly useless anyway and usually required the dev to reverse engineer the console to figure out how anything worked. For Western devs they had to read manuals that were poorly translated from Japanese.

As far as I know they didn't have dev kits for the Nes, all the UK devs used kits they had for micros. A consumer dev kit would obviously be very limited, but in the UK we were buying magazines just to get snippets of code to plug in our Speccys.

>> No.6916162

>>6916135
Yeah, that. EA never even bothered with the NES because of Nintendo's licensing policies and they didn't think the console was powerful enough; it wasn't enough of a step up from the Apple II and C64 for their tastes. The Mega Drive was extremely promising but Sega had licensing policies that were almost as harsh as Nintendo's, including similiar stuff about controlling all cartridge production. So because EA objected to Sega's terms and conditions, some Sega suit sarcastically told them "If you don't like it you can just reverse engineer the thing."

And so they did. And Sega were so cucked that they came to terms with EA and let them sign up as a licensed dev with the right to manufacture their own carts. After that, the MD was modified to check games for a copyright string and prevent unlicensed titles from working. So those first unlicensed EA releases for the system like Populous and Marble Madness can only work on early production Mega Drives.

>> No.6916183

>>6916162
Rare did something similar with the Nes. They were very successful Speccy devs and decided to reverse engineer a Nes, but Nintendo liked it enough to sign them up. The strict rules worked for them as it limited their competition and you obviously couldn't copy carts like you could a tape.

Contrast this with Jack Tramiel stealing Nintendo's patent and blatantly trying to cut them out of a market they effectively created.

>> No.6916193

The Stamper Brothers were impressed with the polish and presentation of NES games which was something mostly lacking in computer games of the time. But they never quite overcame that low budget computer game mindset which is why all their NES titles other than Battletoads are pretty cheesy, simplistic games with small ROM sizes.

The Amiga was a thing of beauty. When you look back at the history of gaming, the fatal flaw in all the companies that died was too many new products. The CD add-on and Virtual Boy era of Nintendo cost them a decade of dominance. Mega CD & 32x killed Sega. Sinclair was killed off by its tv and electric bike projects. Atari with all its abortions and the Amiga was dead on arrival, despite being the best piece of kit to come out of the 80s. Sony and Microsoft clearly learned from this and they had far bigger budgets to play with than all these other companies combined.
