I've been playing this for a while recently, and there's something that's been bugging me. It's not a huge issue nor does it break the game or anything, but it's just somewhat odd.

What exactly is the point of lives in this game? When you die, you get kicked out of the painting and, well, you have to start the mission all over again. That's fine I get that, but what seems weird is when you get a game over, you start outside the castle and you have to reach the level again. It's virtually the same thing except you're just wasting time. That's a bit of a flimsy penalty if you ask me.

Yeah, that's always been a bit weird. Lives aren't that important, it's rarely a big deal getting back to the level in the castle. There are also some rare checkpoints in levels like the volcano in Lethal Lava Land, where you'll start there when you come back after dying. But mostly game over doesn't make much difference, just a small extra punishment for dying a lot.

When you lose a life you can start again from the middle of the level. For example if you fall of the slide in Tall Tall Mountain, when you enter the painting again you'll begin from the start of the slide rather than the bottom of the mountain.

Lives are an outdated mechanic left over from arcades so that they could take more coins from you. While they were carried over to home consoles in the 3rd and 4th generation, they were gradually phased out as games became more complex and took advantage of save data. This game was made during that transitional time so they felt like they needed to include lives since it was a Super Mario platformer but in practice they weren't really important
