Post YouTubers who actually provide something useful for the retro game community.

This dude makes assembly tutorials for tons of different retro machines from computers to consoles. He's constantly putting out new videos too. What a legend.

I would need to watch youtubers to do that.

His NDS stuff is great, its insane the amount of actual knowledge one needs to have in order to put out stuff beyond "muh retro game review XD"

Interesting and cool channel. That’s not necessarily my lane of retro game content I watch but I can see that being really helpful for those that are into it. This doesn’t really fall under your category as far as helpful I suppose but I like this guy when it comes to retro gaming content, he covers some pretty obscure games and uploads a lot

https://m.youtube.com/user/1SNESdrunk

I have a channel on retro games and JRPGs myself, it’s not really ‘helpful’ either in the same way as OP’s is and is more overviews on certain subjects so may not be your cup of tea but feel free to check it out if anyone wants to. I think the production quality is good at least as my brother is a pretty solid editor. Here’s a recent couple vids on health items in video games and opening movies in JRPGs

Thanks OP, I'm too dumb for this, but seems interesting enough.

I recommend Jeremy Parish. I suppose he does fall into the "muh retro game review XD" category but he does a good job of looking into obscure stuff

SNES Drunk is good also. His humor is lacking, but does a good job highlighting the game. Good for ROM collecting

Noah Caldwell-Gervais. Long ass videos looking at 2000s/modern stuff.

Kinda all over the place. Mostly PC games. Primary videos are 1+ hours. Somewhat similar to Noah Caldwell-Gervais

Warhammer PC games

Far from an obscure pick. But super well produced videos looking at vg-tropes/history

For me, it's Glenn Plant, the best provider of N64 videogame analyses.

>> No.6893883

>>6893854
Glenn Plant is a plagiarist. I'm not kidding when I say that entire paragraphs of commentary in his videos are ripped straight from gamespot reviews that are openly available online.

>> No.6893897

>>6893883
Oh shit, example of this?

>> No.6893906

>>6893897
I'm on a phone with 5% battery so I can't check right this second but I'm pretty sure there are some egregious examples in his review if Quake 2 64, compare to the gamespot review. In fact, almost every video I've watched has lifted unique phrases and paragraphs from online reviews. I know this because I'm an N64 autist who actually bothered to look up old reviews of games and was disturbed when I realized I had heard it all before. Sucks too, I used to really like his content, but if you verify my claims you'll see that it's more than paraphrasing.

What about this guy?
Useful is debatable but there's not a damn chance I'd have ever seen most of these games if I didn't see them in a video.

I love ADG. Learned about a lot of old DOS games from him. Good pick.

>> No.6893917

This guy is still just under 100k subs and I think he deserves more. His videos are more like documentaries about the development history of old games and the quality is good enough to be a tv show. Highly under rated.

This is the channel of Jon Burton who is the founder of Traveller's Tales, providing some fairly easy-to-understand vids on how some games of that era pulled off some of their more impressive tricks. Both GameHut and Coding Secrets are worth watching.

Maybe you remembered a bad example, but I'm really not seeing it. Objectively, Glenn's review is a lot longer and has a ton more info than the review from 14 years earlier.

Games Done Quick is useful for sharing explorations of the arcane details of old games, when the run and the commentary both happen to be good. Like with old RPGs in which the RNG is manipulated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NexyGZCZ9KM (run starts at 17:40)

Of course that channel is dotted with less polished runs, annoying nerd humor, fat people's ugly fat bodies, and weird scratchy tranny voices. But you can skip those kinds of videos.

Summoning Salt is informative in a similar way: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtUbO6rBht0daVIOGML3c8w

Kek I appreciate the honesty. The channel is ran by my brother and myself so we thought Gaming Broductions was fitting at the time, but admittedly this was like 6-7 years ago so what seemed cool back then isn’t as cool now. Maybe we’ll change it eventually. We took a break for a long time after never really doing much with the channel but got back into it earlier this year and plan on staying consistent now

>> No.6894012

>>6894000
GDQ runs are usually too awkward for me to even bother trying anymore.

Summoning Salt is great though. I would prefer Tomatoanus videos where his comments are overlaid a single complete run, but he doesn't really do retro stuff.

Even the ones that don't have wiki articles? Also, you really need to separate the artist from the art, so to speak. Don't want to look like a kid, do we?

>> No.6894043

>>6894030
I don't think it's wise to separate the art from the artist. It's impossible really.

he's pretty good. Really goddamn fucking vanilla in every single way tho. Most popular Nintendo/Sega stuff + his personality.

Rarely ever learn anything new, but the quality helps yes.

This is Pandamonium. If you like the Sega Saturn Panda has documented an obscene amount of information on it and is using that to review every game that released in North America. Videos come out at a varying rate but the quality and level of research improves with every video. For his Cyber Speedway review he literally interviewed Peter Molyneux and got the full story about it and Peter shared exactly what game development was like in the 90s. He also interviewed the lead programmer on Ghen War who went on to work on games like Skylanders years down the line. The fact he's putting in so much leg work makes him an incredible insight. He's even uncovered old footage of Rayman32X which was a game only rumored to exist, now confirmed but cancelled. The videos often cover Sega's position in the market, how they compared to their competition and the politics between Sega and their partners.

He has less than 2000 subs and if you have any appreciation for the Saturn, Sega, 90s game development and fair and entertaining historically documenting reviews check him out.

If you think Jeremy Parish is the best or even a good source of game obscurities, you're not looking very hard.
