tyrquake and qbism are two other ports with software renderers. neither is perfect, but at least they have fence textures, unlike markV. qbism even has colored lighting.

I can see why people say it. It focuses on a darker atmosphere like Doom 3 and maybe the PSX version, but still keeps the faster paced fighting of the first few games. Not to mention that people usually know about 3 before 64, so they retroactively see it as "this game but better."
But sequels tend to improve upon what their predecessors did, and Doom 64 removed things from 2 that would've made it better, chiefly the multiplayer and higher-tier enemies. Instead you get to use a shotgun to fight a sea of barons. It's a game that's remembered mainly because it looks different. If it didn't get a graphical overhaul, it would've been seen as another mediocre console port.

I think Lost Souls and Cyberdemons have something almost "symbolic" to them
One is a skull with horns and flames: A basic, yet "universal" enough idea that could fit in different things outside of Doom, whether it's a heavy metal cover or an old painting from the middle ages
The other is a minotaur with a cybernetic leg and arm cannon, along with exposed red flesh/wires, which fits the series' visual identity in many ways, specially the fusion of flesh, demons and metal or tech
Their existence alone makes Doom seem almost privileged because of how great these designs are
Because they are in fact iconic
Simple yet effective
Cacodemon may be iconic too but the former two just seem more representitive of Doom and its time, place and mindset of the creators

Yeah that's my favorite part. UV -fast isn't quite so balanced, that's why you'll never see Caged UV -fast, but Babel sort of emulates it and equalizes player and enemy alike. I'd say the biggest drawback, however, is that pistol starts on Babel are pretty much impossible I find outside of the original Doom levels.

Underdark Overbright is a good way of easing into custom maps.
DOPA is pretty bland, it's often recommended because of misguided notion that it's "official" somehow. still, episode packs for Q1 are pretty rare, so it's pretty high on recommendation list anyway.

For the burning wall, please add a few more shotgun rounds in the beginning. It's not very fun fighting pinkies with just a pistol. Also I would add more small health pickups around the place and some health in the first hell knight fight. Finally, if this is map 2 I would definitely tone down the damaging floor because I believe you have it set to the highest which isn't that fun this early on.
Enemy encounters were fine though I don't think you need to change any of them just add a bit more health and ammo around the place.

It is a functional map, though not particularly interesting. You send me chasing locked doors through sparcely populated poorly lit map without much visual identity. It's difficult to tell where I currently am. It's also too dark to see the door which caused me some trouble at one point. Perhaps lighting up doors would help.
The elevator rides could probably be eschewed. The lone zombie doesn't really have time to react, but I have time to get bored. If you feel like those rides add to experience, you should perhaps find a way to use fast elevator. There are definitely ways to make button niche at the bottom so it doesn't interfere with next floor recognition.
You should learn to unpeg textures at the sides of the walls and use doortracks.
You should probably make lava pit into some kind of secret. People will jump onto your decoration.

if they wanted, the uac bases could have been just metal computers and a generic black sky moon background (like in some early versions) and hell could have just been rocks and bricks

Its the BFG replacement from Heretical Doom, the Sidhe's Wrath. Currently it just shoots a bunch of ripper ghosts everywhere but thats boring af, so I wanted to revamp it to make it more interesting. Also the ghosts look like a swarm of bees when they jump from target to target and that makes me giggle.

The Summon Maulotaur thing is going to be an upfront ability with its tome of power augmented altfire, but I put it as a little niche instakill mechanic in there for fun. Your chances of seeing it with even two enemies being present in the room is pretty low.

Okay nigga, I played your map. I had fun with it but I do have a few suggestions.
-The blood near the red key should be a damaging floor to be consistent with the blood in the rest of the map. Or just make it water.
-The lift near the exit should have a switch up top so that you can take the lift down. I backtracked to the red key area a couple times to pick up health/ammo and look for secrets. It was annoying to have to go the long way.
-The two archviles spawning after the yellow key pickup are total bullshit. There's nothing to signify their presence, they're too far away to hear. I was taking my time looking for secrets and by the time I got over to where I could hear the commotion there were so many revived enemies that I couldn't deal with all of them. I was overwhelmed and killed. This made me quit the map. I figured that's the end of the map anyways.

TS, SS and PK are completely different lump of bread from Doom/Quake/Duke
The gameplay focus and way progression works are different

Oldschool shooter - you progress by finding keys/switches that open up new areas, enemies are obstacle you may fight, or not if you're good enough. Exploration of the levels is a major part.

PK, SS and the like - you progress from combat arena to combat arena where you have to kill all monsters to progress, killing monsters is a requirement 99.9% of the time. Exploration aspect is rudimentary at best.

For me, level eexploration is almost more enjoyable than the combat, and if it's unsatisfactory, the shooter feels barely worth playing even if the combat is decent.

Lord knows I erased the limiters from the MAPINFO lump, because I occasionally use crouching and jumping for dodging, and sometimes I do little victory jumps after clearing a particularly hard encounter, but why'd you straight up skip entire parts of a level like that?
