For example in Vay, you have to pay an NPCs bar tab. In the JP version it's 1,000 gold. In the US version they bumped it up to 20,000 just because they could. I don't think any objective observer would call Arc the Lad and Growlanser "best sellers". Fact is that WD's business model dried up as quality games were rarely left in Japan by the early 2000s. Publishers started localizing a lot more games themselves so a third party that did no in-house development of its own had little to pick from. They also started getting fucked by bigger fish getting into the practice. WD wanted Grandia but there was no way they could outbid Sony.

But yeah, rebalancing the games is the only thing I don't like about WD. That being said, I think I read somewhere that the devs of Silhouette Mirage were impressed by the changes and considered the WD version to be the definitive edition. Could be an urban legend though, I never cared enough to check.

I had heard that too and find it hard to imagine since the Japanese version is super fun and action packed like a typical Treasure game and the WD one is a boring slog where you end up fighting almost every enemy three times.

I'm playing Popful Mail for the first time and so far it's not that bad but I think mostly all he did was jack up enemy health and damage.
