>Considered a revolutionary camera system that changed gaming forever and provided an immersive and intuitive experience
>People still complain about the camera ad nauseam to this day

Just stop already, it’s embarrassing

>> No.6875680

>ad nauseum
Why do people who can’t speak Latin use Latin phrases in their daily speech? It’s like saying “por favor” instead of please.

>> No.6875684

I never had any problem with the camera in this game. I think it's just people making up excuses when they miss a jump.

>> No.6875685

I played Super Mario 64 again recently and it controlled like a charm. The camera was never a huge issue. Is this just a problem made up by zoomers who haven't played it?

the camera will often get into locked perspectives depending on where you are in a level and that's really fucking annoying

Zoomers are used to the more adjusted cameras these days. I wouldn't say Super Mario 64's camera is bad (I've never had a problem with it) but I can see how a zoomer wouldn't like it. Same shit they complain about with tank controls.

>> No.6876765

>>6876759
tank controls are fucking stupid though. unless you're in a tank. I will never play resident evil, ever

>> No.6876782

>>6875673
I think people's complaints about the camera are excessive, it's only a bit uncooperative in a couple of spots in the entire game (which is pretty large), otherwise it works great. It helps that the movement controls are really smooth.

>>6876713
I don't think it's bad even by modern standards.

>>6876759
I don't particularly like tank controls, but I think they're workable enough, Resident Evil is still really good.

>>6876765
You're missing out. Give Resident Evil 4 a try, it's not as horror oriented, but the camera is stuck to the player character in a 3D environment, rather than a fixed camera in a pre-rendered environment. It's easier to get into if you've never played the other games before. Also it's a really fun game, and it has enough of a spooky mood to be fit for October.

the problem was that people were not used to needing to fight a camera at all before then, for many people, this was their first game with a freely moving camera
nobody had to think about the camera in 2D games or fixed-track camera games, but now we have a camera which only /tries/ to follow you around, rather than having perfect, pre-made angles throughout the game
what this means is that it's now possible t get bad angles, or to have the camera slam into walls or get stuck on things and the like
they did a good job all things considered, this was just a new problem for many people

Am I the only one that just never adjusts the camera outside of going first person? Even today I just never feel a need to. It’s not that the angles and camera is perfect but it’s never that bad where I feel I need to adjust it at all

>> No.6877789

>>6877783
na, people today who are used to 3d cameras shouldn't have trouble with it (though it's not quite a modern camera in that there's no second stick to control it)

>> No.6877794

>>6877783
I guess it depends on how familiar you are with the level layouts.

>> No.6877805

>>6877789
I honestly never did on release too once I got the hang of it. It always felt like trying to adjust beyond looking around directly just messed things up. The camera follows you at good enough angles most of the time to not need adjusting imo.

>> No.6877823

>>6877805
yea, look, my post is not calling it a bad camera, quite the contrary
the issue is that while this is a "not bad camera", we came from "perfect camera", in the sense that in 2D games and games like say, Crash 1 which have cameras on rails, the cameras is always perfect and there are no cases where it can possibly give you a bad angle, so while sm64's camera was good enough for a freely-following 3D camera, it was an apparent step down from what we had before
of course, if you think about a bit, you'll realise the problem sm64 faces is much larger than previous games, and that a pre-programmed camera track is not feasable (if at all possible), so it's really just not fair to compare it to those games

3D cameras aren't an easy problem to solve
the solution ended up being just "here's another stick, you deal with it"
but until that became available (dualshock, 1997), we had to deal with awkward angles

>> No.6879467

The problem with SM64s camera becomes apparent in mods. Base game is fine when you understand how it works (most younger people dont at first, myself included when it came out), but there is a whole lot of scripting in levels keeping the camera in check for certain rooms. When you play a mod and they dont account for the camera, it really struggles. Especially in underwater to surface transitions

Yes the pad is awful now, but back then it was a complete abomination. The stick was weird, in a weird place and the button layout was also weird. Zoomers don't understand that the dual shock didn't exist back then and all previous attempts at integrating sticks and pads were regarded as novelties. I sat out the 5th gen, mainly because I was old enough to drink, but also because I borrowed a 64 and was thoroughly underwhelmed.

It's just a zoomer cope for why they can't enjoy things, same as with tank controls

As if it took more than 2 seconds to realize that up is relative and not absolutelike it's a 3d and not 2d environment, yes?

No one in real life ever complained about the controls at the time, it's just zoom zooms on the internet

Most of the time the automatic camera tries to position itself behind you and isn't a big deal. Most of the time, because when it doesn't, that's when it becomes an arbitrary bitch that decides when it can move and when it refuses to without indication, gets hung up on walls or beneath platforms you've ascended past, and seemingly wants to ride up Mario's anus or pan out to a quarter of a mile.
