A lot of these early maze shooters were an exercise in perseverance. It let a player prove to themselves that they could get through progressivly demanding levels. Perhaps in a perfect world, each map would have a unique special gimmick, but the designers didn't have that kind of Mario Bros level design philosophy.

Be sure to check out Ancient Aliens, Valiant, and Sunlust too anon. The later levels in them are hard as fuck but they are FUN in co-op.
I highly suggest a source port like crispy doom for the official levels, and if you're going to use GZDoom or Zandronum, take the time to make it "crispy". Unless a mod requires vertical aiming, keep that shit off. Lower the resolution to something like 800x600, and use the software renderer. IMO, doom benefits greatly from the crunch of lower resolutions.

The base gameplay of Quake is really good, it's let down by terrible levels, which we can fix with level packs. The base gameplay of Doom is dogshit, and can't be saved by "excellent levelpacks".

Duke has good base gameplay. Shadow Warrior has arguably good base gameplay. Blood has decent base gameplay.
