What does /vr/ think of the Pocky & Rocky games? I just found about the series due to the recent announcement of its new game, which looks absolutely beautiful.

I've been playing the games, and I really can't believe I'm just hearing about them now. The spritework is incredible. It's so lively, it's filled to the brim with charm.
The gameplay is fun and challenging, but I feel like it has one fatal flaw, which is the inability to strafe. Kinda weird how they didn't include such a crucial element of the genre.

Great games, don't miss the arcade original because it's a solid game in its own right.
>Kinda weird how they didn't include such a crucial element of the genre.
It's not a crucial element, most non-twin stick run n guns at the time did not feature that mechanic it would be years until it became standard. The original was heavily inspired by Ninja Princess and Commando as well, neither let you shoot/walk independent directions.

same. I played that after playing The Firemen on SNES (same kind of game actually) and you could strafe in The Firemen (1994 game). So maybe that was an invention that appeared between 92 and 94, or maybe that's because it's an arcade game

Had they used the control scheme from Smash TV it would have been better.

Brother bought me a GBA in 2003, let me get two games with it. Obviously Pokemon Sapphire was my first pick, and the second was between Advance Wars and Rocky & Pocky with Becky. I immediately regretted choosing Rock & Pocky.

Fun for a bit, but not Advance Wars fun.

I am trying to beat the arcade game but I hit a solid wall at the stage 5 boss, the blue oni monk with a whip. I've beaten him like once or twice, and it's pretty frustrating.

Great game though; it gets super hectic and you get swarmed if you stand still for too long or move to earlier parts of the level. Gotta keep moving!

Anyone here beat the arcade game or pc engine port?

>> No.6866358

The first SNES game was excellent, especially co-op. The second game felt disingenuous (boss reuse??) and was clearly not designed with 2P in mind (even if you play 2P you're forced to play some segments single player) but I hope the remake is good.

couldn't it be hacked to include strafing? i never hear about control hacks but it would improve some games so much and it seems easy to do

Twinkle Tale was here.
Pocky & Rocky is for losers.
GENESIS DOES!

Looks cute and fun but way too hard for me. I don't think I ever even beat stage 2 of the SNES one.

Be thankful, it's one of the most expensive gba games of all time.

They are all different games, no such things as ports.

I am pretty sure the PC Engine and Famicom versions were straight ports.

And their names are Sayo and Manuke.

Here's hoping that aside from branding, they call the characters by their correct names in the remake. If River City can phase out the nonsense localization decisions, so can this.

The first SNES game is a masterpiece. The rest are mostly good but not great.

It was a very tough game. I still have not beaten the game yet. The co-op is great fun. Even got the spiritual sequel, Heavenly Guardian, just because it was so fun. I had no idea a new game was going to be released, which is great news. It is very charming indeed.

Famicom one is an exploration game (move freely back and forth between rooms), gives you a health bar instead of one-hit deaths, and your ranged attack has limited ammo that also currency to buy items from shops
