Installing an IPS display on one of these bad boys later, so let's get an OG Gameboy thread going.
What's the best of the best when it comes to GB/GBC titles?

It's hard to get people to mention anything more than just pokemon and tetris. Try out Catrap.

Yeah, I'm looking for some of the more niche titles. I already own Pokemon of course it's Crystal, the one entry that isn't compatible with the OG GB and Tetris is good but available on anything.
In particular I'm eyeing Warioland and Legend of the River King (1 or 2, not sure). Catrap seems interesting, I'll look into it.

I normally wouldn't spend this much on a retro handheld, but about 35% of the original display's pixel columns were dead and this wasn't much more than a standard front mobo replacement.

So you'll run a GB for no reason? Why not just emulate if you want to get an emulator tier output? Even an emulator with shaders looks better than a IPS display.

Aside from realizing I’ll need to get a new casing if I ever reopen it due to all the cracked pegs, I’m happy with how it turned out.
Just ordered Warioland and Game & Watch Gallery 3 to wear it in, thinking about getting Legend it the River King 1/2 as well.

Play Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2 if you have a flashcart for 2. They're really great games even if they're a little short and on the easy side.

I'm in the middle of fixing my childhood GB that I had intentionally bricked as a kid

Pic is de-yellowing process. I also bought another GB with a broken screen that I will gut to fix this one, I need a speaker and the pin connector (I could just use the entire back motherboard but I want to change as few pieces as possible, matter of fact the shell is better on that one too and doesn't need any deyellowing)

The one I'm fixing was my dad's and surprisingly it has no yellowing at all, but I'm in a similar boat anyway.
On one hand, it'll be cheaper, easier, and more "authentic" to keep the current shell and just buy a new face plate. However, with how messed up the internal pegs are I can tell that if I ever DO need to open it up again it probably won't close.

This is a wild idea but consider wearing the yellowing look like a badge of honor. I think they fit well with the 80s fax machine aesthetic.

There's no repair thread so I'll ask here. Is there a good solution to repairing rubber membrane contacts? I googled for a bit and someone recommended Caikote 44, has anyone here tried it? I really want to avoid aftermarket membranes because I hate how they feel compared to OEM.

>> No.6865951

I have just always cleaned them with dish soap. Let them dry overnight.

>> No.6865954

I had faulty diagonals on my GBA and I fixed it with this:

>clean the graphite contacts, using a piece of paper and/or just soap
>use a pencil (graphite) to draw on the contact and thus refurbish them

After a couple of attempts at the last point I was able to fix it

some people also recommend putting tape on the motherboard, sometimes several layers, in the center of where the rubber membrane goes, in a cross shape (just make sure not to go over the contacts on the mobo), which would compensate for the worn out graphite, but that didn't work for me.

Also you could try to screw the shell harder OR looser, see if it helps

damn, so this shit does work. Is retrobrighting dead now?

>> No.6865968

>>6865964
I think it has its limits, see for instance there is barely a difference between step 3 and step 4 in my picture, so I think I may have hit the limit of what's possible, or perhaps it's just going to take more time

Then again retrobrite also has its limits.

>> No.6866214

>>6865770

Yellowing is mainly from exposure to non-incandescent light - i.e. fluorescent light. A lot of retrobrighting uses concentrated UV light to achieve the best results, and thats what the sun provides (in a less concentrated form).

>>6865968

thats good to see those results. did you apply any liquid to it at all? And is this in direct sunlight or is it through window?

>> No.6866218
