Bought this on sale on PSN a while back. It is one of the few (good) Final Fantasy games that I haven't played. Is there anything I should know before going into it? Like, big missables, or things that I should look out for?

I'll be playing it on my Vita. I noticed that it seems to support analog controls, so that is pretty cool.

You will either love it or hate it. I love Tetra and am not a fan of whatever FF8's game is, but I think I'm in the minority on that one. Try it and see- but it's completely optional, there's pretty much nothing you can get from it other than joy.

It's pretty much Final Fantasy Missables

There really isn't anything terribly important to miss - if it's something you're concerned with, there are some FAQS and guides that can give you an idea of what to look out for. But there is pretty much no way you'll 100% it in one playthrough, if that's your bag.

But ya, steal from every boss. Try not to synth weapons and armor you don't have mulitples of (until you have the abilities you want for everyone in your party), make sure you don't forget to eat Quina's best spells if you want to use her.

The game isn't terribly hard, so most importantly, use whatever characters you like best!

In FF9 the card game is useless. There is only one moment where it's mandatory to play it in the entire game but even then it should be easy to win even if you have never played it before.

Don't bother, there is nothing to get and it's not even fun.

If anyone's interested I found out a rather easy way to kill the Grand Dragons up Gizamaluke's grotto at the start of Disk2, thus being able to grind at any level you want with the 4 characters you have at that time right at the start of Disk2.
It's a trick I found out that I have never seen in any walkthrough or talked about. (Bear in mind that you can't learn lvl5death before the end of Disk3)

>extra characters

As soon as you find the swamps on the world map (it's at the same time as you can find the first chocobo forest), catch some frogs or you'll miss a character and only get her much later on.

Speaking of the chocobo forest, if you have the patience, play the chocobo mini game. Then you'll be able to find good loot on the world map with it. It takes a bit of time but it's worth it if you want stronger gear as early as possible.

Really it depends how OCD you are in general with video games, but if you're as autistic as I am, you'll get hooked to the Steal command and to the Chocobo treasure hunt.

Alright. It's gonna be tough to explain because basically, the Grand Dragons have 3 types of attacks :
- a poison attack
- a single target melee attack
- a lightning attack that hits everybody

The trick is to make your entire team immune to both poison and lightning, so that the Grand Dragons can only hit you with single target attacks. Like this, and with dozens of phoenix downs, you'll be able to win because he'll only be able to kill one character at a time.

You can become immune to poison rather easily IIRC with different gear you can get throughout Disk1.
Becoming immune to his lightning attack is another story and the solution is the reason why it's not possible to kill them at the end of Disk1 but it is at the start of Disk2.
The trick is to get 4 Coral Rings (which makes you absorb lightning attacks) and equip them on all your character. You can get your first Coral Ring in Disk1 if you let Freya win the hunt in Lindblum, but for the 3 other Coral Rings, you'll have to wait the start of Disk2 when you play as Garnet and Steiner.
You can forge Coral Rings in Treno. Chances are that you won't have the items necessary to get 3 of those though, but guess what, you can actually backtrack by foot to Dahli Village and buy the items necessary to forge those Coral Rings! Now just make sure that none of your characters have them equipped when the game switches back to Zidane's team and you're set.
It totally breaks the 4th wall but it works.

Also to make things better make sure to teach everybody the exp+ abilities. To make things easier too you can teach Mother Guard to Quina.

I think I reached the highest point of autism posssible in FF9 when I found out this trick by myself and lvl'd up to lvl60 at the start of Disk2. Bear in mind though that Garnet and Steiner will remain low level, but at least each time a new character joins his lvl will be an overall number between all your characters.

So you got the Robe of Lords on the disc 1 Chocobo Hot & Cold?

>but guess what, you can actually backtrack by foot to Dahli Village and buy the items necessary to forge those Coral Rings!
This was actually secretly intended by the devs. It's the only time in the game where Zidane and Freya can be the only party members, having their own dialogue for it. It's also the only way to open the treasure chest behind the windmill gears.

Speaking of synthesis exploits, you can make infinite money by synthesizing cotton robe trick, the only recipe where the sell value of the new item is greater than the purchase value of its ingredients.

>Garnet and Steiner will remain low level, but at least each time a new character joins his lvl will be an overall number between all your characters.
Kill Garnet and Steiner to level up Marcus, his stats compound with Eiko, thereby giving her higher stats than if you leveled her up directly. All the temporary party members share the same stat pool with permanent party members, but iirc only Marcus is bugged that his levels compound.

FF9 was the last game by Squaresoft developed exclusively for the Playstation. Only Final Fantasy Origins would release later on the Playstation, but they are rereleases of FF1 and 2.

Wikipedia has this to say:
>In the game's conceptual stage, the developers made it clear that the title would not necessarily be Final Fantasy IX, as its break from the realism of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII may have alienated audiences. This led fans to speculate that it would be released as a "gaiden" (side story) to the main series.[15] By late 1999, however, Square had confirmed that the game would indeed be published as Final Fantasy IX, and by early 2000, the game was nearly finished. The developers made several adjustments to the game, such as changing the ending seven times

Wiki's source for the above doesn't work anymore, but I remember reading about this change of mind within the company years ago. I love FF9, but disc 3 and 4 lack the finish of disc 1 and 2. Sakaguchi began planning in summer 1998, meaning FF9 had less than 24 months of development while most teams were busy with PS2 titles, like The Bouncer and FFX.

Speaking of FF8, am I the only one that think the encounter with Beatrix is fucking bullshit? Even after so many times, you are "forced" to lose against her because of Shock, an attack once use by an honorable warrior but now wielded by a bitch like her.

They could have at least make the last encounter of Beatrix the one that make her lose the battle and make her THINK what the fuck she actually doing at that time (killing the princess).

>So you got the Robe of Lords on the disc 1 Chocobo Hot & Cold?

I considered it for the longest time but gave up at some point.

I guess you're right, this wasn't the highest autism point possible in FF9.

However there is probably something more autistic than getting the robe of lords in disk 1 : it's eating enough frogs in disk1 to be able to deal 9999dmg with the frog drop at that point.
Idk if it's possible but it should be. I'm just unsure what makes the frogs in the swamp spawn again : is it simply time passing by? (if yes that means anybody can do it by letting the game turned on) or a number of steps? number of random fights fought?

>This was actually secretly intended by the devs. It's the only time in the game where Zidane and Freya can be the only party members, having their own dialogue for it. It's also the only way to open the treasure chest behind the windmill gears.

So if they intended it for Zidane&Freya, why did they let the path open for Garnet&Zidane at the start of Disk2?

>Kill Garnet and Steiner to level up Marcus, his stats compound with Eiko, thereby giving her higher stats than if you leveled her up directly. All the temporary party members share the same stat pool with permanent party members, but iirc only Marcus is bugged that his levels compound.

Wow. I had no idea. Now I want to try that out.
Does that mean that you can add up the stats? In the sense that, you could remain low level for every character, but level up Marcus a lot thus having higher stats for Eiko at a low level; and THEN leveling up Eiko so that she has even higher stats than she would possibly have the normal way?

Random Question

During one of my playthroughs something "strange" happened and I really tried to figure out why.

There is this one time where Alexandria is being attacked, the part where you can actually fight with beatrix.
For some reason, Steiner fucking one-shot everything.
He did a shitload more damage than he should, and I could never figure out why.
Does anyone know why that happened?

As someone who has completed hot and cold twice (gotten a gold Chocobo twice in two separate playthroughs) all I can tell you is just keep digging. Persistence is the key.

You'll notice that chocographs are buried much deeper than regular items (like 34-56 depth).

The Moogle will tell you when tere are no more chocographs in the forest anymore, in which you should go to the lagoon on disc 2 or 3, then repeat the process.

You can also just do this with Quina and matra magic, I think it's called? Just keep killing Quina til she/he revives with 1 health, then use Freya to keep protecting Quina whilst being immune to lighting/poison.

This guy. You will NOT find all the little Zodiac Collectables without a guide, because they are literally pixel hunt items that are hidden all over the world, and most of them only give you one chance to obtain them, when you have no clue they're even there. Never mind grinding to learn every single ability from every piece of gear on every single character, getting -all- of Quinna's blue magic, etc.

But yeah. Steal a lot. Explore. Just don't get super hung up on getting everything your first time through.

Also as annoying as it is, the Chocobo Hot and Cold mini game should be played early and often to make best use of the crap you can find, and also to upgrade Choco as fast as possible. Having early transport is both fun and dangerous.

well does Cover cover multiple-target attacks like the Grand Dragon's lightning attack?
In any case that also means Freya will cover the Grand Dragon's single target attack, which means that she will die, and that if the Grand Dragon uses its lightning attack before you revieve Freya, you're screwed.

I guess it might be possible (granted Cover works on the lightning attack, which i doubt) but much harder than my tactic

Definitely. Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy IX were the worst offenders in this regard.
Digital Devil Saga had a really well paced turn-based battle system, for example.
