Do you play the same characters you played as a kid in this game?
I find myself sticking with Ness and Yoshi mostly now, they're pretty damn good. When I was a kid I mostly used Link and Falcon.
Also talk about Smash 64 in general: memories with friends, favorite items, stages, music tracks, etc.

>> No.6846509

When I was a kid I played as Pikachu. Once Melee came out I switched to fox on melee. I still stick to Pikachu on 64 tho

>> No.6846515

I always picked Samus because I liked robots lol

I can play any character well and will usually accomodate depending on what my friends pick, I hate having multiples of the same character in a match. But my personal favorites for chill play are Samus and Link, if i want to win ill go with Mario or Kirby.

>> No.6846728

I love this game. Actually still play it a few times a week with my roommate (I'm 25, he's 32 or so). When it came out, I played with my older brother, who'd use kirby, and my dad, pikachu. I was 4, and I held the control stick with 3 fingers, like a pencil, and used my right hand for all the other buttons. My brother was trying to teach me about the Z button, and saying how you could roll or shield with it. Couldn't reach it with my tiny hands and the weird way I held it.

I use Falcon in every game.

I started out with samus. I played a lot, and one day in the boys' choir at church someone brought an N64. I was the youngest and smallest by several years, and often picked on. It was very satisfying to win most of the games. By age 8 or so I switched to Luigi and a bit of Donkey Kong, after realizing Samus was a woman. One day our older cousin Alex came by, and beat the crap out of us with Captain Falcon, just insane upair combos.

>> No.6846849

My favourite gaming memory was playing doubles in 64. I went down to a smash tournament in Texas with some other Canadians. I was playing with one of them, a nice tall woman. We had lost our first two matches of the round robin, and were playing our hearts out not to get last. Game 5, we're on Hyrule castle and she dies while I have one stock, and it's 2v1. The other guys, one has 2 and the other 1 stock. I focus intensely, the opponents get flustered and somehow I win. I sit there with a big smile, and my partner leans over and gives me a proud smile and the warmest, most comforting hug there has ever been.
P.S. I switched to Link (from DK) late grade 10. I was losing weight at that time and aspired to be like him.

I always pick Link in Smash 64. All of his moves felt great. His boomerang and bombs were the bee's knees. Then in Melee, he got fat and his items felt like a wet fart.

>Do you play the same characters you played as a kid in this game?
Depends completely on my mood. Smash has so many characters now that I'll gladly play Random with buddies and the like. I tend to use close attackers with projectiles to fuck up the others, and god damn it was about time pic related made it in.

Back then my best memories of smash as a kid was for 64 when fighting with my family. Melee has my worst since I was raped while playing the game. Brawl/Project M/Wii U/3DS was great for when I got into college. I have some friends to play Ultimate with at least

hell no, I played link. once I realized how shit he was I started maining mario.
though I now play mostly pikachu or jigglypuff if I'm feeling confident. but mario is still one of my favorites to play.

on melee my go-to character is also pikachu or jigglypuff, but I like to play all the characters in this game except mewtwo, I never gotgud with him.

on brawl I play mostly triple d, pikachu, lucas and ike. though I have no problem playing any other character. this game is more approachable.

on smash 4 my best character is dedede, they made him viable so I can play him with confidence. pikachu is still a solid choice and also added duck hunt to my favorite list.

I've never played ultimate so idk.

How was your reaction when you unlocked Ness?
Back in 1999, I had no idea who he was, and he was also the hardest character to unlock (I can unlock him effortlessly now, but back then it was hard for me).
When I unlocked him, I kept thinking he may be some japanese NES mascot (because of the name). I didn't even know NES was called Famicom in Japan back then.

I recognized him from Nintendo Power, since they did a long-ass feature on Earthbound back when it came out that I read through because the clay figures were grabbing.

>less soul than 64
Still had a lot of soul. Yeah it didn't have that 90s n64 era charm, but melee's adventure mode got me hyped for the rest of the generation. Seeing the N64 levels through a 6th gen lens made me think it was a glimpse of what was to come and it felt like it was going to build off of what the N64 laid out. Then the rest of the console ended up being a huge letdown. It was good, but I always feel like there was some seriously wasted potential there.
