>Three consoles, same title, all different games.

The PCE CDROM release is a port of the PC88 original. It is the same game, but has nicer scrolling, CD quality music and better colours. Popful Mail for the Sega CD is a complete remake of the PC88 original game, commissioned by Sega. Sega was really interested in making enhanced ports of PC88 games for the Sega CD, like Silpheed and Popful Mail. I guess they thought it would make the Mega CD look more appealing to that userbase. Kind of like how the 3DO later appealed to the PC98 crowd. The Super Famicom version is a completely original game. Not a port or a remake like the previous two versions.

Just beat this game today
Decent gameplay, beautiful animations and backgrounds, pretty good music, and absolutely cringeworthy trash voice acting and dialogue and cutscenes, although they are pretty good in animation.

Would be like an 8 out of 10 if not for that shit, now it is like a 6.5, the only thing that got a laugh was "are you completely retarded?"

Didn't mention I played the unworked designs, the bosses are weird as hell, some are trivially easy and some are just slightly easy, but none are actually difficult for the right reasons. Only the final boss was even slightly difficult if you keep a fuckton of healing items you just won't die. Characters are also unbalanced, tatto is really good at the start and trash at the end

>I get the sense that Popful Mail was a failed attempt at creating a mascot

the original game was made for an 8-bit Japanese home computer called the PC88. It was released in 1991.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3nCG9TvJGg

PC98 port from 1992:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66mgwFTBpXw

PC-Engine CD version from 1994 (ported by NEC) This port has improved scrolling, voice acting and CD audio.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl_1_kwGcfQ

Mega CD/ Sega CD - 1994 (By Sega and Falcom) It is a complete remake of the original and still has a lot of similarities. But with remade graphics, and different level design. This is the only one to be released in English.

Super Famicom - 1994 (made by Falcom) This is another remake of the original game. But it is completely different from the Sega CD remake.

Sega also produced this 5 minute long animated music video, in 1994. I think it was a promotional thing for the game. Nice animation though.

Pretty much.

> PCE-CD ROM
Enhanced port of the PC88/PC98 originals. Developed by HuneX and NEC.
> Sega CD/ Mega CD
A remake of the original PC game. Sega was in charge of this one. But they also worked with the original developer Falcom.
> Super Famicom
I think this is a sequel. But it could be a reboot. It is a different game from the other versions. This one was made by Falcom directly.

I find it weird that the original game was remade multiple times. But they never followed the game up with a sequel.

Sounds like it is a difficult task to get translated text characters into the ROM due to how Falcom compressed the game data. It is a shame since it is a beautiful game.
