Liked 1, though the second half kind of dragged a bit and the input delay was annoying.
2 is the reverse, didn't like the first half but enjoyed the second half, still prefer 1 overall.
I got tired of 3 after a couple hours and haven't finished it. The intro was awful.

The only good parts in 1 were the school and hospital (including the remixed hospital at the end). Everything else was annoying filler that required a walkthrough (at least for my zoomer brain) to get through. Silent Hill 2 was a lot better with less filler overall, and better quality filler in general. There's no denying that the apartment complex in SH2 is the worst "dungeon" though. They only get better from there, unless you qualify the weird underground maze thing as a dungeon. That sucked and was easily the worst part of the game. The hotel at the end was absolute kino. By far the best part of any SH I've played (only 1 and 2 so far)
>>6838974
By the way, what's the best version of the SH3 in you guys' opinion? I have both a PC and PS2 iso and I'm unsure of which to play. I was having a bit of trouble getting the PC version working (again, zoomer who's not used to installing old PC games). I've heard the PC version has some perks like better lighting and 60fps. Is it really that much better? Should I stick to tinkering with it until I get it, or just settle for the PS2 version?

The outdoor street sections in SH1 sucked. I guess there were a few decent things outside the dungeons, like the caterpillar/giant moth boss fight, but generally speaking I found those sections pretty annoying. It's basically just run for your life until you get to your destination with a bunch of enemies following behind you.

>> No.6840034

The PC version of SH3 looks incredible, a Japanese PC game from 2004 with native 4k internal resolution support. But its a clusterfuck to set up. The widescreen fix is a must, even if you intend to play at its intended 4:3 because otherwise the game has stuttering. The controls are also a bitch to set up, if you want the authentic experience with a control, with zoom-in controls and proper side-stepping. You have to install DirectInput and use a 360/XB1 controller, a ps4 controller doesn't register the analogue buttons properly.
tldr; ps2 is perfectly fine. pc looks better if you're willing to spend a day jumping through hoops.

You aren't wrong. It really was creative and has some of the most unsettling content in the series, but it definitely deserves some of the shit it gets. 50% of the game being pasta is too obvious, so let me focus on the sound design: SHIT. Burping nurses, stock sound effects all over the place like the generic horror scream.wav right at the beginning, and the splat effects as the ghosts come out of the walls in the following cutscene. For how based Yamaoka is when it comes to the tunes and most of the sound throughout the series, he really phoned in the SFX here.

I think the ost to 1 is extremely underrated. I always judge a game's soundtrack based on how well it adds to the game rather than it having bangers you can listen to while walking around. 1's industrial chaos added so much to the horror in that game I honestly think it's the best in the series.

I mean this is just unnerving. The only other game that I think approaches this is Kane and Lynch 2.

Each game went softer and more triphop. Guess it might've been for the best anyway if Yamaoka thought he wouldn't be able to top that harsh industrial noise he did for 1, but it really did add to the horror atmosphere amazingly well, even though it's hard to listen to it when not playing.

It truly is. It's one of the many reasons why I consider the first game to be the best one, the OST/BGM is extremely well done. Even just listening to the simple faint ambience that plays while walking around the town makes me uneasy.

>> No.6843336

It depends. The way the tracks are used in-game gives an extra feel to them from just listening to the CD. The catchy ones stand out on CD the most, but like someone above said the atmospheric ones have a strong impact too in-game. Still, my favorites change all the time. Theme of Laura is probably the best opening song of any game though next to Snake Eater. Using a song like that for a horror game is genius, I don't know how he came up with it.

Why hasn't nip Silent Hill been topped, or even matched in 16 years? I can't think of anything else that pulls off its particular brand of grimy US-by-way-of-Japan locales, what you'd get if you threw only the good parts of The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Boards of Canada, and Massive Attack thrown into a blender, that particular Lynchian-stilted dialogue, and that monster/room design.

Siren just sucked. I hate the gameplay of that series so goddamn much and it lacks so many of the other essential components of retro SH games. Burgers made something original and interesting with Shattered Memories, but it was ugly compared to SH3 and 4 and was an interactive movie more or less. All the other round-eye SH games sucked complete shit. Will we ever see games like these again?

Just felt a little more obvious about that stuff in a garish, western sort of way. The bed monster and dick-piston room in SH2 were on the nose but they didn't have to expressly SAY shit as much. Not to be too hard on the game. I did like it and think it's worth playing.

I somehow knew you'd come back with 2, and great cherry pick too. Yes. The burgers made a better looking game on hardware a gen ahead 8 years later. To be fair, though, I think they made it with PS2/PSP limitations in mind, sadly. Whew, don't even compare those fucking versions to SH2.

I still think SH2 compares favorably to SM during indoor/dark cutscenes especially employing the flashlight with soft shadows. SH3 blows SM away in about every way. 4's environments aren't all that impressive, but the models are still fantastic and way better than SM's.

Siren was held back by the game being way too obtuse for it's own good. A real shame since it's fairly scary. Shat Memz was a firm okayish if you only played it once so you didn't see how actually heavily flawed it was. Should have just ditched the stupid ice shit and made a full adventure game instead since that was the best part

I think it's because it's still not "finished" yet and it's probably easier for them to update each part individually as it gets worked on. It's not hard but it is kind of tedious and pushes some people away, would be better if they could just include it all in one.

Oh fuck off with this. Fuck's sake I mess with PCem on the regular, build DOS-98 machines for fun, and looked past Retroarch's flaws for years. I know how to goddamn mod a game and read pcgamingwiki. It's nothing new to me. What I'm trying to say is that there's no fucking point when PCSX2 saves your time and gives you more or less the same results. Probably better results, as I'm sure they still haven't reached 100% parity with the PS2 version despite all the autism poured into fixing the PC port over the years. Fuck, they only just recently fixed soft shadows. They're still fixing sound cue issues as seen in recent logs.

Glad you spent all that time fucking with BG, man. I've had my autistic rabbit holes as well, but who cares?

Downpour would have been good if:

>no affiliation with Silent Hill franchise - on its own, it's a solid horror game, but can't live up to classic "silent hill" expectations
>A little more effort into monster design, please
>Konami had hired bug testers - game was buggy as fuck on release and one major quest (homeless subway guy) didn't even work
>Konami had allowed dev to FINISH THE GAME - game was supposed to get deeper into Annie, female cop - eventually a comic, Annie's Story, was released and it completes the story in a big way

Overall, Downpour is solid, but the good parts of it make the bad parts/unfinished elements more frustrating. Like a D-minus student who "could have had an A if you tried harder". Homecoming is the F kid that no one expects to do well. Downpour showed hints of greatness.

Still worth playing, if you can mentally convince yourself to see it on its own merits, free from franchise expectations.

Ehhh not so sure about that. The "maze" part really was terrible. Legitimately the worst part of the game. There are kino SECTIONs of the descent, like the encounters with Angela and Eddie, and of course Tocula Prison if you count that, but the more abstract sections were kind of shitty. The hospital is pretty underrated imo. Even the apartment complex wasn't as bad as people say it is. It was just longer than it needed to be. If they just would have kept it to the first section and not had the section after you cross through the window it would have been better.

SH2 rewarded you for playing the game in whatever way you wanted, at your own pace, based on your subconscience choices, unlike the others which were based on how many times you saved, how fast you played the game, etc. This alone gives SH2 an edge over the others, but the unnerving movements of the monsters, awkward and slightly offset voice acting, and motivations of the characters is what makes it the best SH game. Also, Harry and Henry were both just blank slate characters stuck in awkward positions, where James had character development and a reason to go to Silent Hill, not just "stumble on it". I'll give you the lore of SH1/3 was pretty good and SH4 had good scenes in it, but overall SH2 was the best in the series.

Meant that neither are SH1 or 3. No SH ending is affected by how many times you save, actually. Unless maybe Downpour did that. I don't know, I don't play garbage.
The only thing that effects your ending in 1 is rather or not you find and use a certain item and a small side-quest you do.
3 has 1 ending that you always get until NG+ and then it's just based on how many monsters you killed. 4 is just rather or not you let the escort lady die during the final boss.
