How come the Super Famicom had a better design than the Super Nintendo in basically every single aspect?
Console design is better in Japan
Controller design is better in Japan
Box design is better in Japan
Cartridge design is better in Japan
Why did they fuck it up in North America?

It didn't. First, the boxes have less brand consistency in Japan. Second, the Super Famicom is an ugly dark grey while the Super Nintendo is closer in shade to an early 90s PC. Third, the Super Famicom controller doesn't have the concave/convex button mix that makes the Super Nintendo pad a little extra comfortable.

Southamerican here, US version looks A LOT more SUPER, more mid-90s if you know what I mean.

JP version is SO 1989 mainstream new-wave aesthetics, which is nice also but a different beast.

I guess it makes sense according to the release date of the Famicom vs the NES. They had to jump different gaps.

I'll never understand why they thought those purple buttons on the SNES pad looked better than the red green blue yellow of the SFC. Hell, it even matches the switch/yoshi/koopa troopa shell colors of their flagship launch title.

>>6837318
I never disliked the SNES design but sadly it had a design flaw, I knew multiple people whose power/reset buttons would get flaky over time and the game would constantly reset or fail to start (not due to "cartridge dust"). To fix it we'd do things like jam toothpicks under the buttons or pile a stack of books on top to keep them wedged slightly upwards so the contacts wouldn't misfire.

I think the SFC definitely looks more reminiscent of its Japanese era though, I can't look at one without imagining playing it on a tatami floor.

Real reason is this: Color blind people. Which is why the NTSC controller has concave and convex buttons as well.

>> No.6840747

>>6840742
To elaborate: In-game instructions would have to rely on the letters ABYX as opposed to color, because the purple buttons all looked the same in the American version. While some PAL games would only show the color you have to press.

>> No.6840748

>>6840742
>Real reason is this: Color blind people
That makes no sense. It's not like color blind people would be in any way disenfranchised by the 4-color buttons. The color isn't important, it's just for visual appeal. Reducing them to 2 shades of purple doesn't help them in any way. And there's no reason why they couldn't have added the concave buttons and kept the colors.

If the in-game prompt shows you to tap the green button, tell me how a color blind person will know which button to press. NTSC games would have to change the button colors and the designers would then be forced to put the "Y" on the in-game prompt to be direct about which exact button you have to press. If the colors remained the same on the controllers, they wouldn't bother to make that change.

American market analysts were afraid that the round shape of the console and the colourful buttons would drive away many customers thinking it's a childish, toy like device not meant for serious gamers. Especially when the Genesis was arguably cool and dark and edgy, they just couldn't risk it.

Right, which is why after the SNES every controller has the letter etched/printed onto the button itself and not on the side of it. The point is that this FORCES devs to think about the icons/prompts they put into the game. To not rely only on color.

>Why did they fuck it up in North America?
It's all marketing.

>Console design
Nintendo of America obviously thought the Super Famicom design wouldn't be appealing in the US. The final result looks more like a "toy" but this is probably what they were going for. I think they were afraid consumers would think it was some generic gray cassette tape player. The Super Nintendo design screams, "THIS IS FOR GAMES."
>Controller design
This is nitpicky, the controllers are identical. Only the coloring is different. The purple-grey color scheme was added to obviously match the new design of the console.
>Box design
The boxes are better and more compact in Japan, and even show the full art more despite being smaller. My theory was that, again, NoA was worried US consumers would be confused. They didn't want game boxes to blend in with VHS Tapes at stores. This is especially relevant since Video Store rentals were much more common in the US. So the big wide boxes were to help them stand out as not being VHS tapes.
>Cartridge design
Again, the different cartridge style was just to match the console. And of course, region protection. The smoother, rounder Super Famicom cartridges had US boxier, more square counterparts to fit the change in console designs.
