It quit upon printing this text and never progressed further. The screen with initialization info was cleared and this was displayed instead, before throwing me out.
It happened when I tried running it in my buildgdx folder because I thought it had all the files needed, but it turns out it didn't. For some reason it worked in a DOS install so I guess it does look for some specific files and throws this completely unhelpful message when it can't find it (and hides the init screen which would be helpful for troubleshooting).
I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a coder who can't even build real life rockets.

The enemy AI is cheap. They advertised it as being super duper smart but the instant anyone gets alerted to your presence the entire island knows exactly where you are and can shoot you from a billion miles away. The best way to play is to shoot one guy and then camp in a decent spot with just enough room to run away from grenades and wait until they all walk into your bullets. All the plants are cool and all but all it did was gen in the way of your vision but it doesn't reliably block enemy vision. This leads you back to camping next to a wall with one reliable entrance. Also the enemy monster AI has a bad tendency to just not work.

If you want you can look up longplays of the game and its really clear when people are playing on easy walking around without too much care, and an actual difficulty where the player nearly dies to something he can barely see so he has to run and hide behind a building forever

The game's alright, but it plays like an unpolished and amateurish Quake mod not worth the massive praise it gets. To me it looks like New Blood is using the retro shooter fad mainly as a nostalgia marketing ploy. Somewhat related, but I find it odd how Andrew Hulshult's OST is used in most of their games and how now he got a job on Doom Eternal DLC. His music isn't even that good.

Dusk isn't pretty, but it has some decent environments that make up for it. It's pretty much programmer art though. If you're coding and animating and level designing etc all by yourself you need to cut the corners somewhere or a little bit everywhere. Or it'll never be done.

Honestly, I don't really like Doom soundtrack that much - it has good and iconic tracks, but overall? I agree. I never cared for the stuff he did for any of the console versions of Doom or Quake. It's all VERY samey.

There's some jazz and stuff in Classic Doom's soundtrack, even some stuff cribbed from movie scores, but there's legitimately a bunch of stuff based on heavy metal and hard rock in there. There's stuff from Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Pantera, Alice In Chains, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Sergeants Of Death, Body Count, etc, etc.

Doom's soundtrack was never 100% metal, it had a bunch of variety, but there's a lot of that stuff in there, so even if there's a misconception to say that Doom is just metal, it's likewise a misconception to be saying that it really isn't.

If windows refuses to work with DOSBOX, you can use Bloodedit, a modified version of nmapedit to make your levels. It’s still pretty buggy, but it works. I’ve updated the archive page to include it (bloodedit.exe). There’s also a slightly newer version of DOSBOX. The texture pack is included in the archive link. If you want to do it manually, copy the art files and surface.dat from the texture pack and place it in the directory with mapedit.

bloodedit (our revision of nmapedit) is still early in development. It's got some neat features, but it tends to crash often. The controls between both are pretty much identical. Try them both out and use whichever one you prefer.

Mapedit will automatically load all art files in your Blood directory, so just plop em in there.
NMapedit has mostly the same controls except it has some modern amenities like running natively in Windows and being able to view both 2D and 3D modes at once. Also it has the capability to organize art tiles by type which really speeds up finding textures. To do that you need the tiles.cfg posted on discord.
As it stands it's missing some Blood-specific hotkeys/features, so I plan to use it to draw geometry and texture and use regular mapedit to script.

Its not really a Doom game, its actually kinda comfy strolling through the environments at a leisurely pace. Its not spooky unless you're easily scared. Shotgun sucks just use the smg. Also be ready to throw grenades at the zombiemen because they will rape your face if you don't deal with them fast enough.

If you want to play it do NOT play the BFG edition because they dump shitloads of ammo on you removing all tension. Also do yourself a favor and write down all the locker codes ahead of time. You have to listen to audio logs to unlock locker doors and you might be in the middle of a combat segment when someone says the door code so you have to listen to the whole thing all over again.

You play as big stompy mecha, that acts same as Mechwarriorts 80-ton mech... But its actual size is the same as Domguy.

A good newbie experiment is to think about some of your favorite iwad maps, which do you think look the best, which do you think are the most fun to explore, which do you think have the most fun combat, etc. Then make a couple of maps in a short little minisode (2 or 3 levels), where you combine and mix the concepts of those things.

Something that I found fascinating when making 2048 maps was that the 2048 constraint was actually pretty focusing; I knew I could only make a map so big, and I could never get carried away and just work on the map forever and ever, because sooner or later I would start running low on space (yet you can actually fit a really decent lot of level in there), so I had to wrap the thing up, and conscious of that, I would have to also kinda plan the map in my head, maybe not the entire way in all of them, but be at least a few steps ahead.

So perhaps make a few 2048 levels based on some of your favorite parts of Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom. You wouldn't even need to publish it (but if you think they're fun, go ahead), you could just use it as an exercise in getting into a mapping mindset.

Well, by definition it's not critiquing his work, it's critiquing his person, which there isn't necessarily anything wrong with doing, but it doesn't tell him (or others) what he does right and what he does wrong, in terms of design anyway.

I think it comes down to "does it feel unique/detatched enough from doom" in order to be considered its own thing.
Most of the new retro shooters are quite simple when you break them down to their very core:
Ion Fury is basically a Duke TC, Dusk is jankier version of Quake in a modern setting, etc.
When you really play and look at the games though it becomes apparent theyre something more.Even when you look into the past, the build trinity at their core are very similar as well, same goes for Doom, Hexen, Strife, and Heretic. Despite their similarities I think most people here would agree Doom plays nothing like Hexen or Strife.
In my opinion Hedon manages to detach itself enough to be considered its own thing (the fun-factor of Hedon is an entirely different thing altogether), so I can see this becoming more commonplace.

The Doomer Boards were questioning the same thing, and I know every single DBP is top quality, but it never gets the recognition it deserves because their forum triggers snowflakes.
