How does it hold up so well visually? The shadow detail still puts a lot of modern games to shame.

Only the PC version (it even has a soft shadow option) does since the Xbox one is far too low res and jaggy. Haven't played it on a CRT in a while so maybe it holds up better on one.

For whatever reason devs stopped trying to push dynamic lighting even though it was the coolest shit. You can't even blame consoles on this one because Riddick had it and it was originally an Xbox exclusive.

It's funny, because the technology for it got insanely better. A lot of games shifted to deferred shading during the next generation, and a game like this is exactly the type that would benefit.

I tried messing around with the shaders to improve the look further. Should be possible to port over the one from Doom 3 Sikkmod.

How do you just port shaders from one game to the other? They don't even use the same engine.

Riddick is almost entirely a tech showcase, the moment-to-moment gameplay is conceptually great but executed badly. Yes, for both Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena.

Shaders are universal. Both renderers work on the same principle, so it's just a matter of switching a few variables around.

Why does this game from 2004 at times look better than games that come out in 2020? The fuck happened?

>> No.6834490

Video game graphics didn't improve exponentially from when this game came out to present day. The leap from 5th gen to 6th gen was huge but every console generation since has just been marginal differences.

>How does it hold up so well visually?
It doesn't; it looks like garbage. There are hundreds of PS1/Saturn/N64 games that look much better than that ugly piece of shit, so I don't know why you'd be surprised that a 6th gen console game would "hold up"

>> No.6834503

This thread got me in the mood to play this game only to find out it isn't easily available anywhere on PC other than for 20 on Amazon

Anyone have any alternatives or should I just resort to console?

>How does it hold up so well visually?
i wouldn't say it does
it's not a bad looking game for it's time, but it does look extremely 2004
like you can guess it's exact age just by looking at it, many 2004 games look just like it

You can resort to OG Xbox if you want to play a non-raped visual version, but if you can't at least find a torrent of the Developer's Cut aka the 2004 PC version then you can always go for the 2009 remaster, but it's up to you.

This version broke a shit ton of things such as the 1vs1 melee combat AI. It now blatantly reads inputs and must be cheesed.

I know, and it changed little things like music and item locations (which trivialized a terrifying part of the game I won't want to spoil), so the 2009 should be a last resort.

I'm sorry, but shaders can be GL, DX, Vulkan compliant. You can apply shaders to textures or to screen space. it's not just "switch a few variables around." I'm more interested in this process you speak of.

>> No.6834737

The 2009 version looks like it needs to drastically cut down on the bloom, HDR, and desaturation. Other than that, looks superior in every way.

I would love to see what the 2009 version would look like without the all the unnecessary post-processing like you said, because there are things I like about it such as the improved lip-synching, and the fact that limbs actually connect to Riddick's hand this time around when he drags them.

For me though, the 2004 PC port still remains king.
