In good JRPGs, whenever a monster or a character is said to be powerful, gameplay supports rather than contradicts it. For example, when you finally reach the villain in DQ8, he absolutely wrecks you, forcing you to go back and do some quests and craft some weapons (or just grind if you're stupid). But in most FFs, and especially FFVIII, monsters just die to you, no questions asked, and then are shown to be strong or weak or whatever, sometimes even winning the battle in the cutscene right after being absolutely wrecked to pieces in gameplay. In PS1 era FFs, gameplay is an afterthought and an insult, and FF8 is the worst offender of all. They just fuck up as video games and waste their potential as interactive media.

Quistis is no better; a teacher and professional soldier by age 18, on top of being an expert with a whip.
The whip could have been done in free time, and basic training isn't exactly years of training, but you need like 8 years of college to become a teacher (after 12 years of public school). So she'd HAVE to be a prodigy. Except the plot doesn't depict her as such at all.

-i admit the card game is awesome and addicting. i think i got all but 5-10 cards or so.
-art direction and sets were really cool.
-awesome music

-literally angsty teen characters
-i did a low level playthrough and you can literally beat the game by running away from all battles they let you run from.
-pacing for the story was janky and stilted in spots.
-and the worst...junction literally breaks the game

ff8 has its charms. but it is deeply flawed with an overly ambitious (which mean unfocused) story with game-breaking mechanics. it's not the worst ff game. it is the worst of the golden age of ff games (ff3-ff9)

I played it when I was a teen and thought Squall was just a shitty edgy teenager, but on a more recent playthrough I realised Squall is just an extremely anxious young man. As a literal child soldier struggling with his responsibiliti es and his traumatic youth, it's not surprising that he has problems exprrssing himself and communicating with others.
