Anyone here retrobrighting?

Sometimes when I want to “refresh” the “old machine” who‘s been spamming this board, I remind him that gen 6 is legal now and that he’ll NEVER EVER get it changed back.

Retrobrighting isn’t permanent, and your pc case will eventually turn yellow again. Most of the time just as bad as it was before. But you should have at least a good BUT broad 1-4 years of a clean white machine before it turns yellow again. I’ve retrobrighted more then a handful of dream casts, amigas, and snes consoles And they ALL eventually turn yellow again, some of them aren’t so bad, others REALLY bad. It’s just luck of the draw.

sorry if this is a stupid question but do the plastics naturally yellow over time or only when exposed to sunlight?

Gen 6 is already here. Nothing schizophrenic or speculative about reminding a certain very autistic anon about this unadornable fact.

>> No.6808858

I just clean the dirt, bugs and stains out of them.
Yellowing is not a big problem around here surprisingly. My understanding is that it has to do with UV from the sun, and there ain't a whole lot of sun here.

just leave it out in the sun instead

direct UV rays from the sun bleach things white and are different from diffused UV rays coming in through the window

oh shit, what happened to that anon from one of these threads from a few days ago who started experimenting with this method by leaving a yellowed piece of plastic out in the sun?

>> No.6809008

>>6808829
Apparently it's a combination of UV-(?) light that gets through your windows and is also coming from lighting inside your home and warmth that gets the bromine color out and visible.
That's why cases that were kept in dark and cold basements tend to look fresh.

There are also reports that DIRECT sunlight can bleach those cases too without any chemicals applied but by far not as quickly and takes several days of sunlight to get anywhere.

Hey you know what's really good for your skin? Go to a resort that's known for being the hottest you can get to right now and stay out in the sun all day, especially the key hours 10am - 3pm. Don't wear any sunscreen, that'll only spoil the effect. Do it every day for as long as you can. Your skin will come back in pristine condition, it'll be a new you.

Thanks for the update. Really looked forward to tit.
Also, if you're just using that item to experiment, maybe just keep using the sun method and see how far you'll get this way?
The hp method is proven to work really quickly so there wouldn't be a lot to learn from it I think. Of course do it that way if you intend to get that thing working and ready as soon as possible again.

i didn't see much difference between 2º and 3º day, so i think 4 days is enough for the experiment.

Ah, alright! That's actually a good information. Seems like the sun only method just tops out early/slows a lot down so reaching full bleaching may even take months without the help of the chemicals.
Thanks again.

Most old plastic is getting brittle anyways.
Take a C64 for example. One that isn't even yellowed and if you give it a squeeze on the top bezel it will shatter to pieces.

I have some old machines that I kinda forgot about for almost 2 decades and hope it's not too late still but don't have time to take care of that just now. Hope I will have time soon to at least remove the batteries and do a quick cleanup when needed.
