Can we all agree that Techno was the best thing that happen to Racing games.

>there is nothing like a high speed police chase while listening to heart pounding industrial music.

Remember in mid-late 90s mags when reviewers started bitching about techno being in every game?

I'll never understand reviewers.

>> No.680765

"Techno" and "best" are two words that should never be near each other.

I don't like my videogames to sound like I'm in a cheesy goddamn club full of idiots dancing to tuneless, soulless, bland pseudo-music. If that makes me a music snob, so be it, but goddamn it.

Not all techno is bland and soulless.

I've never heard anything that changed my mind.

I know, LOLOPINIONS.

But still, it's just dull dance music, and I guess fine for clubbing when you're young and stupid, but outside of that, why?

"Soul" in music refers to the human imperfections. Techno is not supposed to have soul.

>> No.680798

We're talking about arcade racers, here. I can't imagine racing to Vivaldi being very fitting, haha. To write all techno off as soulless is your loss, really. Wipeout 2097 (XL) is an example of a great racing game with great techno music in my opinion

The live drummer has more soul than the drum machine. The natural singer has more soul than the autotuned singer. Real instruments have more soul than samples.

The whole point of techno is it's soulless and robotic sounding. You should be listening to house instead if you want soul.

I am willing to bet most of you think loud, Swedish house mafia trance stuff is techno and stuff with break beats is industrial.

Techno is the funkier side of house, which is disco funk. Not loud trance leads.

Industrial is noisy nonsense. It was a bunch of poor punks on heroin with samplers making noise. Look into Chicago music history. (Chicago house, Wax Trax industrial, etc) before you make hilarious claims

I hate techno in racing games with a passion. Why? First of all, because it sounds like fucking rubish to me, but also because it replaced rock music.

Let's take a real example so you can't call bullshit on what I said:
Formula One (1995): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnXy95A_dyE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8UkGZQFFBU
Formula One 97: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-2pZX-S0N4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNq2ijILCvc

Convinced?

>> No.681980

>>681751
I'm calling bullshit. Aside from a looped guitar riff, those songs are pretty electronic. None of them feature a drummer or a bassist - that shit is programmed, bud. As an engineer and musician who works with rock and electronic acts, I'd say this classifies as electronic music.

Techno is not funky. Listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsct-e-HVE0

Do you hear any funkiness? This track is nothing but sequenced percussion, and it is still great. After I heard this I understood that music shouldn't be a lifestyle. If you can make such a great track like this then most music is a waste of time. I don't take music very seriously anymore.

It's not the absolute laziest I've heard, but that's kind of the point. It's just as enjoyable to listen to as eg. Beethoven's 9th Symphony (an objective masterpiece of complexity). If something so stripped down can be just as musical, then obviously music is not actually about skill and is mostly about social status. It was really a great relief to understand that track. I don't need to care about music anymore. If it sounds good it sounds good.
