Maybe... maybe it's just really hard to play with the Wii controller?

Kids these days don't know what it was like only getting a new game once in a while. They have a billion options at all times.

I was listening to a friend bitch about his 6 and 8 year old nephews the other day, since they tried playing super mario world and couldn't understand the concept of HOLDING a button, as in they would just PRESS buttons and would never actually run, even though they were told that THIS IS HOW YOU RUN.

It's just incompetance by making everything act as a nanny to players and kids don't have to learn anything anymore in the most mass marketed games.
This is what it's like to learn that CALL OF DUDELY is what these current gen players consider high difficulty/high skill, complex gameplay.

Pokemon is extraordinarily easy to pick up and play with no knowledge of the language it's in due to having pictures of everything to guide you and a limited movepool that you can figure out the basics of by trial and error.

I can tell ya what happened with Super Metroid, it was designed in an age when it was common for the player to be instructed through the manual alone, and not through the game.

You pick up the morphing ball in Super Metroid, and that's it, No "double tap down to curl" tip, just you have the morphing ball.
You pick up the missiles, "Select [Missiles] and press [Fire button] to fire", no tip about using missiles to open red doors though.

Metroid Zero Mission is contrary to this though, when you grab an item it always instructs you how to use it, and what possible use it has.

Super Metroid had ways of teaching you to do things without explicitly stating them though. The infamous "Noob bridge" where you can only cross by holding the run button, or the pile of little white enemies before you get the plasma beam, is there to teach you about the piercing effect of the weapon. There are also the space pirates immune to the spazer/ice/wave beam before you grab the plasma beam, that lets you know you have a much more powerful beam.

I didn't rage at that one, because I expected him to say all the things he did.

I skipped Battletoads and watched the Mega Man 2 one because it seemed like it'd be more interesting, and I must say he redeemed himself a bit.

But I mean come on, it's Mega Man 2

The only place I got really stuck on where I had to go consult the internet for directions was the wall-jump section.
