Apparently the canyon area of Bob-omb Battlefield was originally filled with water which explains the bridges and the opening gate. But it was deemed too difficult to traverse and was removed by the devs early on.
Do you think actually would have improved the level? I always thought that empty most area was weird and a river through the course would have added a nice dynamic. I bet Giles Goddard is to blame.

>> No.6804674

Thats news to me got a source? Its interesting so the entire canyon was water? Could have worked if there was something to do in it. I wonder if a romhack could put water in there? So did opening the gate flood it with water?

No, it would have been terrible. This was most people's first 3d platformer ever, and the stage is supposed tot each basic controls and mechanics. Adding swimming, which operates on completely different rules and physics, would have been pantshittingly stupid.

they could have put something else as the first level

How does one get screenshots like that from the game?

they could have, but the entire level is fundamentally built around it being a tutorial I imagine

good thing you can learn to swim outside the castle.

on that note, people who get high on shrooms say things like water has healing/purification properties. so that ties in with mario and shrooms. and regenerating health in water.

used some tool to look at levels. in the past, some programs were developed to work with very particular game engines. one tool of some kind allowed for a viewing of entire zelda ocarina dungeons, showing them in 3d at a distance. their designs were actually fascinating and probably would not have been noticed in normal gameplay. spirit temple has an interesting design.

Yes. Imagine falling on the gray slide thing or on the middle bridge and having to swim all the way back to the first bridge.

>> No.6805773

Why didn't they fill it with water in later stars? Like how the castle moat goes up and down

Because it's a lie.

That makes so much more sense. Can somebody add it in?

They tried it and felt that it sucks. It probably sucked. Game is one of the best of that generation, if not one of the best of all time, I think that team knew what they were doing.

wait, wouldn't that mean the water would be spilling over everywhere? the "canyon area" isn't contained at all

This, you can probably find a ripped model of the map somewhere online and see how it would look. I bet that either the starting area would be flooded, or water in the moat would be ankle deep.

from the strategy guide:

>>6804674
>Miyamoto: It was kind of like sculpting a diorama out of clay. First you make a very general shape. For example, with the King Bob-omb’s stage, for our initial, general design we’d have that river in the middle of the map, which you cross to reach the boss area, which is atop a big hill that you have to wind round and round as you ascend it. But say we put Mario in that map, and moving him around, we realize the river flows too fast and it sweeps him away (laughs), and that’s too hard for players, so we swap that river out for a desert valley, like Death Valley. So the form remains the same, but we gradually add more and more ideas, changing the map as we go.

Okay well they didn’t NEED to give the river a steady current, could have just been a still lake.

There's something kind of sad about these images which show the entire level. It looks so small but it once felt so huge...

Literally nostalgia. I can picture the tiny mario running around in the same scale as played.

I can see why they removed it. Half of the level would've been water, it's too much for the first level in the game.

seems obvious in retrospect, speaking of, when are we going to get a leak of the other 15 levels they had to cut from SM64?
