playing with a gamepad, controlling these games feels pretty shitty. its hard to hold the run button the whole time because the buttons are spaced too much for it. On a keyboard its easy because the keys are so close. But its hard for me to see how people playing on a controller could deal with holding down B the whole time and not finding it awkward. Especially on a SNES controller. It makes me think that not having an auto-run option was a major mistake.

If you've actually held a NES or SNES controller you'd know it's pretty manageable

This. The thing that actually fucks me up is accidentally going sideways off of a vine in Mario Madness. Not sure if it's bad d-pad technique or my controllers are just worn out.

did you know people played yoshi's island unaware they didn't need to hold a button to run

im playing all-stars with an xbox 1 controller, and using mode 2 controls where X is run and A is jump, and it feels awkward as hell. the buttons on the SNES controller look even a bit more spaced out than on the xbox one so it doesnt seem that manageable to me. So you would have to hold Y the whole time and use B to jump if using mode 2.

"Mario Madness" is the, dare I say it, quintessential zoomer filter, because it reveals who never owned the box.

what in the fuck are you on about? the buttons are less than 1 cm apart, you can fit your entire thumb over both of them at once.

The old NES controller was always easy to use with this. The thumb across both buttons so you could just roll from B to A without letting up on B. I still try to find that kind of feel on newer controllers on newer systems, but it's not always obtainable.

The NES controller felt like an upgrade after years with this.

The fact that no Mario game I've played maps the run button to a shoulder button makes playing them frustrating as hell. Any game that doesn't let you no-questions-allowed remap controls is a kusoge.

I use xbox and ps controllers just fine with my emulators. even easier since they're more ergonomic. square is b, X is a. it's much more natural to have them diagonal with the usual mario-style grip than horizontal.

In whatever alternate universe this is not a troll you put your thumb over both buttons, it is incredibly comfortable and the ideal way to control it. Everyone figured this out when they were single digits in age.

You run by holding your thumb on the run button and rocking it sideways to jump. It's pretty easy by not holding it like a modern controller, just roll your thumb over to jump. I have my childhood nes pad and it's so worn that I can jump with a feather light touch, really great action from a "worn out" controller.

Seriously you should get a usb nes controller, xbox 360 and xbone controllers just don't feel right. Makes it much harder than the original form factor.

Why not just use touchscreen controls and emulate on a smartphone? Buttons are too oldschool. (It's a dumb joke no need to give you's)
