Wrong.

First one was the jank ass, slow as fuck waste of time.
Second had the whip fuckery.
Third is indeed set in the future, but there's no snow. This is the one with the random soul/skill system

There's then 3 for DS

First is the one in the snow
Second uses the castle as a hub world and you play as 2 people at once
Third is basically an action game, but it's fun at least.

The warp room placement was pretty poor, and it continued the problem of "warp to the next area" instead of actually selecting your desired warp point.

One of the worst parts of the DSS system was that you had to figure out what certain combinations did. Others were more obvious, but those that required an input command to activate were difficult to discover even when reading about the DSS cards individually in the menu.

The discovery of DSS cards was also bad, which is why I play a patch that makes DSS cards discovered around the castle instead of being random enemy drops. It makes for much more fun progression.

If you haven't, you should try playing Symphony on Luck Mode, it makes the game MUCH more fun. It makes it common to get drops from enemies, giving you supplies and unusual equipment, but it makes Alucard weak as shit for the first hour of the game, so you really have to approach encounters carefully and avoid taking hits more than ever. I ended up relying more on spells and special weapon attacks than I ever had before, because I absolutely had to drink blood, I absolutely had to launch seeking projectiles from a distance, because strong hits are so deadly. It's a bit frustrating at first, but after a while, you build up some necessary supplies and tools, and you get into the rhythm and necessary tactics, and the game becomes a really much more enjoyable challenge.
Alucard does eventually get pretty strong towards the end anyway, but overall the game is a lot more fun.

I can't recommend SoTN's Luck Mode enough.
