Can we talk about hidden gems you found over the years for PS1? Maybe some Jap only releases that still can be played regardless of no translation?

pic related. just found this. it's such a shame you can't understand anything if you don't know moon but it doesn't hinder the gameplay at all.

Macross is one of my fave anime series as well and my expectations were low but this is a really solid and fun game.

>> No.677816

Dunno if it counts as "hidden gem", but Gradius Gaiden. It's Jap exclusive and imo the best part of the Gradius series. Also, no bothersome story so you can play it without knowing moon.

Come to think of it, the West really got the short end of the stick when it came to STG releases. It's a shame.

Yes, I've played RAD and I know about RCD2, but fuck, I spent so much time just playing that demo disc. I want to own it. I thought it was Playstation Underground but Giant Bomb's exhaustive content listing doesn't have it.

LSD: Dream Emulator

Only came out in Japan, and is based on a dream diray kept over the course of a year by some person (maybe whoever made it?)

It's pretty trippy, and everything is completely random. As dreams go on, things get even more trippy; stuff starts getting weird textures over it with japanese writing, the music gets weirder, more random events happen, and colors change drastically, though everything starts off relatively normally. There are a few landmark places, and how they're connected never changes, but everything else does. Colliding with anything "jumps" the dream to another area.

There is no point to the game, and it cannot really be beaten. The dream counter resets after 365 days, and you get a neat 30 second animation. The controls kinda suck, and I wish someone would make a hack with more modern day movement controls

Definitely worth a play just to check it out. Play is on drugs if possible. If played late at night, alone, and with headphones, if can get pretty creepy

Technically I don't think Jade Cocoon counts as a 'hidden' gem since it did have a sequel for the PS2, and both got translated into English, but since neither of them did particularly well I think it's riding the fence enough to be worth mentioning.
>Dat Miyazaki-esque art design
>Dat pokemon hype era monster-capture gameplay
>Dat mind blowing monster fusion system
>Dat waifu
>Dat love story

I'm still in the tedious process of trying to catalog all the different monster combinations. I'm trying to stay diligent and just take it one step at a time, but a 2 generation pedigree is bigger than it sounds and the whole thing is mind numbingly daunting. I know there should be a way to calculate that using permutations but my math skills are far too deteriorated for that. Want to say the formula is ((x+y-1)!) / (y!(x-1)!) where x=171(the number of basic monster types) and y=6(the number of ancestor monsters in any one monster's pedigree) But that'd make 37,873,734,360 different unique combinations(+8 secret monsters) and that seems WAY too big, even for this game...

There should be 2 circles on that screen representing analog sticks (or maybe their range). Then in the middle of each circle there's a + sign that you can move around with the sticks. Then with some buttons the range could be increased or decreased.
I think what.happened here is that your analog doesn't recognized by the game (or the emu).

TL;DR: If you use epsxe, try this: press F5 when booting the game so it shows analog on in upper right screen. If that still failed, try different input plugin.
I remember playing the game till the end in epsxe 1.7.0 (as 1.6.0 freezes right after final mission).

also, there is another PS1 macross game that's at least worth checking out. I heard it's not as good as VFX2 but the soundtrack and graphics are cool. it's Macross Plus Game Edition.

I can't seem to find an ISO for VFX1 though. so if anybody knows where to find one, much appreciated. I search many romsites already.

this one too. In fact, there were three macross games for the PS.

this one is a sidescrolling shootemup.
I like how Macross has a solid history throughout all kinds of retro systems. newer installments had interesting releases on the gba, the PS2 and the PS3. fun games.

the one pic related reminds me of the Macross 7 trash manga (which I remember was really good, I bought some volumes as a teen) and there probably was a movie too, but I never saw that one

OP here. I just saved this thread so that I don't lose track of some of the wonderful games posted here. I recommend you do the same. a romsite doesn't offer that solid advice on what's worth playing. why am I saying this? I was just getting into ps1 simulation and never had the actual console, I wanted to look further than the essential classics that are always mentioned anyway and there is so much that still isn't fan-translated, that I don't know and that bugs me to no end as a fan of retro games and in general.

so thanks a lot for posting all these so far!

Intelligent Qube (I.Q.) is a decent hidden gem.

Quite a challenge in the later levels. Unlockables include faster moving characters to render getting better scores a tad easier, and it comes with a puzzle maker, although, I don't think you can load them up immediately, it's just a luck of the draw kind of thing.

That aside, it's still a fun minimalist game.
