Discuss hardware, games and homebrew, and smugly post about running retro 6th gen games in full 480p widescreen at a locked 60fps.

What do you use to connect your Xbox to your AV receiver/TV?
Does this cable carry the full surround sound or just stereo?

>> No.6782327

I bought the Hyperkin HDMI cable and it sucked. The picture was not very sharp and it had noise issues. My AV receiver does not work well with 480i over HDMI, you might want to consider this.

In general most of these Retro console to HDMI converters are rubbish, asside from the boutique autist ones.

I bought a hand made ridiculous quality component cable and it was an excellent decision. It still ended being cheaper and higher quality than the rare official component pack.

My brothers Xbox had a dead HDD.

I just built this cable https://www.instructables.com/id/XBox-EEPROM-ReaderWriter/

Dumped the EERPOM off my softmodded Xbox and wrote it to the broken one. Then I cloned the my Xbox's drive using Chimp 261812 and chucked it into the broken one. It worked and also got softmodded in the cloning process.

The DVD drive still doesn't work. But I don't give a fuck. It's not tied to the motherboard anyway so one out of another broken Xbox could eventually replace it.

Also if anyone does this only overwrite the Xbox HDD Key, don't overwrite everything on the EEPROM.

>> No.6784019

How good is the backwards compatibility, anyway? I've never owned any Xbox but I've been thinking of picking one up, and thinking it would be more efficient to just get a 360/Xbone, but only if the original Xbox compatibility is decent.

>> No.6785723

No, Microsoft stopped to evolve it in 2007 with numbers above. Everything beyond those numbers are blacklisted by Microsoft, mean 360 won't boot game if it's not in the list.
But on hacked side people managed to whitelist everything, but it's just that - ability to boot them.
Games will glitch like crazy because there's no game-specific hacks and just bare-bone emulator inside 360.

>> No.6785931

>But how do I install homebrew software and an aftermarket dashboard from here?
Burn this and use it to install a dashboard, I use UnleashX but some prefer XBMC.
Once you have a custom dashboard you can use an FTP client to connect to your Xbox and copy things to and from it.
>And how do I upgrade to a SATA HDD
Buy a SATA to IDE adapter (put electrical tape on parts that can bump the hard drive) and an 80-wire IDE cable, then follow a guide for cloning hard drives with Chimp.

>> No.6785958

When I say some games don't boot, I mean they'll just give a black screen or crash the console, not that the emulator denies booting them.

>I remember having a grudge against the Xbox because I correlated the lack of a Max Payne port meant that the GameCube was viewed as "kiddy" and the Xbox was seen as the "mature kids console".

I remember one of the developers saying that they had issues getting Max Payne running on the GameCube, because of some memory issues. The PC version of Max Payne used a lot of VRAM for the textures. One of the Remedy employees made this claim on the Max Payne forums.

All the multiplats were best on Xbox and of course there's the non-pozzed versions of Halo. Having to resort to shitty PC ports and cut down PS2 versions of games instead of just emulating the Xbox is crap.

>> No.6797078

Even PC versions of games were often just upressed PS2 ports instead of the best possible version. For example Battlefront 2. The Xbox version had more detailed graphics and better AI that could use heroes better, that did not end up on the PC.

People drive home the Dreamcast 2 meme for the following reasons
>handful of Dreamcast ports/sequels/games that meant for Dreamcast (Gun Valkyrie)
>Controller is the DC controller with an extra analog stick and black and white buttons
>being cutting edge in its online capabilities like the Dreamcast was in 1999
>EA refusing to support Xbox Live, similar to how they refused to support the Dreamcast
>both systems had a short life of about 3-4 years
>microsoft actually was going to loan Sega about 5 million dollars to stay afloat before the Dreamcast was going to be cancelled, and even proposed making a GDROM addon drive to play DC games on Xbox
As fan of both systems, it's still pretty far fetched. Outside of Microsoft and Sega supporting each other early on most of the similarities are coincidental. EA for instance refused to work with Xbox Live because they wanted to run their own servers, and the short life spans of the console were for different reasons (Sega being neck deep in debt and had too many Dreamcasts in their warehouses, Microsoft being in a feud with Nvidia that lead to them working with ATI as soon as 360 development began).

one common way to softmod an xbox is with a specially crafted savegame for a couple of specific games
since xbox memory cards are in fact just 8M usb flash drives, and the controller ports (both on the console and on the controllers) are regular usb ports, you can plug a regular usb flash drive into an xbox using an adapter such as the one you mentioned
if you load up such a special savegame onto your flash drive, then load the savegame in the appropriate game, you can then get the xbox to run some homebrew, at that point you can softmod the xbox (or flash a modified bios to do a hardmod)

It was devastating as I enjoyed the Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast greatly to see Sega unable to continue coupled with financial hardships at the time, quitting videogames was easy. The money situation has not improved much but there does seem to be a lot of great games I missed out on.

Got the latter, and I have heard of the former. When we get through this COVID thing, I'll be on the lookout for Stubbs. Loved Outrun Online Arcade which made me finally understand the series and 2 is pretty cheap, but Coast 2 Coast is out of my pay grade.

I had to get Gunvalkyrie, it's like a long lost Dreamcast title to me. I guess it is my fault for passing on the Hitman games. I keep hearing Blood Money is the one to go for and the new ones are really good leveraging beefy hardware. Is Contracts a good place to start or would you recommend starting from the beginning?

Thanks! Found a few more not on the shelf. Having quit videogames, I did miss out on Halo. I heard MCC allows you to switch to the originals, would that be acceptable or is it inauthentic? All these great titles you named, should be a lot to catch up to and find, I just fear the current prices I keep hearing about.

I got my xbox running xbmc and play games through hard drives. I would love to have the dvd reader working again, though. It was already not working when I bought it.
I have read that finding a replacement is pretty difficult and the easiest way would be just to get another xbox to try and salvage the drive. Are there other options?

>> No.6826338

Fixing it, which depending on what's wrong with it, may be impossible.

Common fixes include disassembly, cleaning and re-lubricating the drive's parts, and sticking a price sticker on the top of the drive in order to fix the "drive won't open" problem where the electromagnet becomes weaker and sticks over time.

You can replace the drive with a flashed version of a PC drive of specific models only that are also old. I'm not going to specify further on that one. Look it up if you care.

-- oh and don't give me that "i don't buy discs for show!", yes you do, otherwise all your games would be loose discs put on a spindle, you keep the cases just because you like them, right? well that's wrong with treating the discs the same way?

>> No.6831342

MGS2 PS2 is actually 480p, you just need to enable it with gsmode switcher. Konami just opted not to support it at the time.

>> No.6831352

i've dumped my HDD key so i can just build another drive using that.
i could also just do a TSOP if i wanted (not a softmod but easier than a modchip).

>> No.6831415

i just had a look at the install process and this is probably faster than softmodding.
stupidly easy.

Sure, people collect dumber things.

I don't think I got them primarily for show back when I didn't have a modded system and OG XBL was still up.

Yes: FTP it's contents to a PC
No: mod it then FTP it's contents to a PC

>> No.6831590

Thanks anon. I'm guessing this is a hard mod? Not sure if there's one go-to method or multiple as I've only softmodded a 3ds so far. Looking to do my Xbox and ps2 next

They can output RGsB with a softmod, which some VGA monitors will accept. There's also an HDMI mod coming out that you could convert to VGA.

>> No.6832507

Only modded? Is it locked to interlaced otherwise?

>> No.6832524

For RGB, yeah. You could also use a component-to-VGA converter for 480p+ resolutions, or an OSSC and HDMI-to-VGA.

No pic, but I bought cheap one on Ali for its connector and changed the wires for more quality ones from huge stock of old RCA cables laying around, they from VHS/DVD/or some other AV-tech.
>Cables? Doesn't he mean the box with the optical port? You ain't getting that just with cables.

Here's my modest collection. Most of it is from when I was a kid. I have an OG Duke controller. The CD tray will only open if a disc is already in it to weigh it down, I know that's something to do with the drive belt. It doesn't bother me too much.

There are still some games I would like to get for nostalgia purposes. Goblin Commander, Brute Force, Indigo Prophecy, Psi-Ops, Freedom Fighters.

What were the OG Xbox's 2D capabilities? Did anyone even bother making 2D games for the system?

>> No.6834645

Xbros, I just sent Wreckless over FTP and tried to play it, but somewhy video and audio are desynchronized in cut scenes. I remember having the same problem with Blinx. What could be the reason? Is that because of 50/60 FPS difference?

>> No.6834651

I believe 2D graphics was implemented like it's implemented in modern consoles and PCs, just mapping textures to polygons. As for games, these's an exclusive Metal Slug 3 port, for example.
