Let's have a handheld scotformer thread. Firstly, how do you feel about Donkey Kong Land?

>Donkey Kong Land?

I really liked Donkey Kong Land, I played it on a Super GameBoy adapter for the SNES and never had a GameBoy. But for an 8-bit version on a cropped screen, it really wasn't bad. One of the better original platformers for the system. Has a good soundtrack too...

The original Donkey Kong Land has a lot of catchy original tracks.

GBA should at least be retro by now.

I have such happy memories with this game. Mostly comfy winters playing it while I waited for the bus. I somehow got pretty far in it, despite that I was playing on a play-it-loud clear brick of a gameboy.

wait, can you not discuss GBA on this board? it's basically SNES level technology

It's really not. It's a 32bit ARM CPU pretending to be an SNES though a bunch of different software routines.

Does anyone else sometimes get slightly scrambled sprites with this game? Doesn't seem to happen in emulators. I hope I'm not getting bit rot.

Nintendo generally tried to keep their GBA games closer to the SNES in design. But many third party developers took advantage of the 32bit ARM CPU in the device:

The GBA was discontinued in 2006. But was replaced by the Nintendo DS in 2004. "Third pillar" thing was BS.

So what is going on when chips start fucking up for no reason? I've lost count of how many snes systems I've collected with bad ppus and cpus.

>> No.6763342

>>6763328
Well people do all kinds of stupid crap around their consoles like smoking and spilling stuff. But how many old games have you collected that don't work anymore? I can count one hand the number of second hand NES games I've bought over the years from pawn shops and thrift stores that didn't work when I brought them home. Those ROM chips are made to last decades and theoretically should as long as you aren't throwing your carts around or keeping them in a hot place.

Systems: A few. I got like 4 parts Super Nintendos that all have bad ppus or cpus and HAD one good one just for playing games on....that I sat and witnessed the ppu die on while I was playing Super Pinball. Pissed me the fuck off. I keep my stuff clean and dry. Still haven't frankensteined myself a working one yet.

lots of off-topic rants here, but I really hated Land 1. Iv 100% Land 2 and 3 (and 3gbc jpn), and think they are both amazing. DKL1 is such a bad game. My biggest complaint with it is to save the game, you need to collect K O N G letters in a level. This is a portable game, and the levels were fairly long, so you shouldnt have to play through a long hard level WHILE collecting all 4 K O N G letters just to save. Was this just to extend play time (having to play the same level multiple times before you know it well enough to find all 4 letters)?
