Was this the most ''ahead of its time'' 90s PC game?

No, that would be Ultima Underworld.

That's not Quake?

It blew my mind in '94, the same year Doom 2 came out, it was like a mix between a FPS and an adventure game set in a cyberpunk survival horror movie. That "the future is now" vibe hit me pretty hard.

But as another anon points out, Ultima Underworld was first, but the way I see it Ultima Underworld is to System Shock as it is to Deus Ex.

Another game that struck me as ahead of it's time when I played it upon release was Terminator Future Shock (1995), it was a FPS that had driving and flying parts in a fully 3D world. In retrospect it kinda felt like a proto-Bethesda-Fallout, maybe not too surprising when it was Bethesda who made this too.

i'm unfamiliar with this game, can you explain in what ways it was ahead of it's time? because it certainly wasn't graphics, 1997 but it looks like a win3.1 game from 1994

God System Shock was such an adrenaline rush of pure fun. The remake won't have shit on it.

Feels bad, man. No wonder modern games are so shit and "gamers" so dumb

The Remake has been reset to be more 1:1 like the demo we got when it first was announced. There is a new demo out now on GOG, they've gone from Unity (thank god!) to UE. I actually preferred the aesthetics of the first Unity draft though (but was janky af), it had a more grainy, gritty pixelpunk look that was more like the 90s game, but the new demo is doing the same but to a lesser extent so it's just nitpicking really.

Check it out on GOG, it's free.

Exile was indie openworld RPG, long before it became the norm.

Quite good too, lives nowadays as the "Avernum" series.

It's not talked about much in retro reviews and look backs, but it was awesome. Great art style and the gameplay was good for it's time. Shooting body parts and gunning down Hunter Killers is a good time. Rampage lost me because I couldn't play it with my toaster.

Jurassic Park Trespasser (1998), a deeply flawed experience, but a game that was way ahead of it's time and it's (largely unrealized) ambitions even more so.

It's like SS in many ways but instead of RPG elements it had a "free-style" approach to movement, inventory, controls and interaction with the world based heavily on physics. It has a first person view perspective but using weapons are done in a true-to-word free-aim system. It's a survival exploration game that is in keeping with Jurassic Park's central theme and is perhaps the game based on the license that puts you in that world the best.

The issues with this game was first and foremost performance related, it was poorly optimized and completely refused to run on some systems. It also had a lot of bugs and would crash, lock up or create no-win/fail states hindering progress. There also was the problem of controls, the free-aim system is a neat idea but sadly also very frustrating to use, making it hard to line up and land shots to the comical but not so ideal point in a survival game with limited resources.

It's become something of a cult-classic, with several fan remake projects attempted. It would be nice to see a remake though, and if they wanted to stick with that free-aim system it might actually work today with a VR setup.

Check out videos on Youtube for more info if you're interested.

Boneworks is basically a modern-day Trespasser since it has a fully physics-based player body

Unironically, I would say Half-Laaaaahhh fuck it, I don't want to get that anti-Valve asshole in here again.

But seriously, it's Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Despite the fact these choices cannot be any more obvious.
