How do I get good at Puyo Puyo? It seems like a fun game. I've watched and read many guides like the official SEGA guide on youtube and despite them being well explained, I can't wrap my mind around this game

>> No.6756871

Watching this thread because I'd also like an answer to this. This game and other "halves matching" games like Dr. Mario feel so random compared to, say, Tetris, where 99.9% of the time you can figure your way out of any predicament. It's like the game is designed around making mistakes and just barely digging yourself out of holes.

watching high level japs doesn't help new players as much as what i posted, english speakers breaking the game down, the mechanics and strats and how they practiced to get better.

if OP was already advanced then your vid would be useful, good try though

Puyo Puyo Tsuu arcade, the most popular.
>>6756903
Nah, just the opposite. Listening to blowhard commentators equivocate is a good way to make you feel like you're "practicing" without actually learning anything. The game is not so complicated that it needs explaining, just watch good players and learn from them.

nah you goofed up, and your autism won't let you admit it.
a newb watching a high level chess match won't understand shit. Puyo puyo is complicated at their level.

i'm not going to claim i'm good at puyo puyo, but i have beat the story mode in the original game. the first game is seems really unbalanced in the sense that it's really a race to the first big chain, mainly because it's hard to cancel garbage. once garbage starts to pile up it's extremely difficult to recover. you need to get good at setting up x4 or more chains. there are lots of patterns to look up online, but just play enough until you start noticing what works or what doesn't. for instance, it's harder for garbage to interrupt your strategy if you stack things vertically. also, it's really important to minimize the amount of dump moves you make. you really need every move to work for you a little bit. even making isolated groups of 2 or 3 is great because it makes improvising a chain easier or a lucky chain more common. also note most CPU players have their own AI strategy. For instance, Harpy has a very distinctive "stack along the walls" style to it. for weaker players try to adapt play to the different styles if you are having difficulty with a particular opponent.

i think the later games had slightly different garbagemechanics, but haven't played them.

I would say it is best to play in a group of similarly skilled players. Over time, through mutual competition, everyone would lift each other's abilities. Friends and family are a great place to start. My general technique is to build sets of 3 connected, and put 1-3 of a similar colored puyo within range offset by another group of 3 with another 1-3 of a similar color within range, you will naturally know when the time is to unleash its potential energy. Know the losing condition is only for the right center column to fill up, so if need be, you can stack over on the sides. There is a bit of timing before the jama-puyos actually drop, and its amount capped at certain intervals, so you can plan for an "escape route" or delay the drops as best you can for maximum defense. It is a very fun series enhanced by your friends and family.

this is really hard when puyo puyo tetris is full of smurfs and puyo puyo champions' playerbase is so small that you're always matched with japanese gods that can pull off 8+ chains with little effort

How about friends and family? I did not mention online. We played lots of 4-player Puyo Puyon (4) on Dreamcast back in the day. After this worldwide health crisis is over, a great shared experience playing next to one another is a great way to improve play. You can discuss in real-time how things went, the fun is amplified being alongside friends, the shit-talking can get real to push you further, you will know no one is cheating since all are playing on the same machine without lag factors, and when you pass the controller to others you can observe others while you're on the sideline. Since you'll be with friends, you may want to lift them up too, so the overall level of everyone's play improves as a whole. With the damage spread to 3 other players, everyone can react right there with you. It's an instant party.

To beat the cpu

Consider speedrunning. Puyo is not like the fighting genre where playing the cpu is entirely useless to developing skill.

>> No.6763992

If you are lucky and have a friend who likes it, play it with them for hours on end, all night if you can get that carried away. With enough practice you should start getting it. I remember trying for ages to get 3 chain combos and then I managed to learn what shapes and patterns of beans I needed to make to make mega combos. Puyo puyo 2 remix is the most fun version as you can counter your opponents combos instead of having to take whatever is sent to you
