Trying to get into shmups, currently in the ones made by psikyo, but getting absolutely destroyed by rank system.
How the hell do you handle it? Derank before places you have trouble with?

General shmup discussion welcomed

The best way to get into shmups is to take all of your fun games, hobbies, etc, and just throw them in the trash. That way you have to play a shmup if you want some entertainment. Otherwise there’s no reason to even try.

Try reading the patterns better and learn what to expect so you don't get dead. Psikyo shmups are very fast yet very memo-heavy, once you figure out what to do they're pretty easy.

anon, getting higher rank makes bullets faster and patterns harder to the point that you have to fucking bomb, that's why I'm asking how to deal with it.

>> No.6755685

Psikyo does not require any rank management outside of some very specific instances. What you're getting destroyed by is the game itself, there's no easy trick that you can use to avoid learning it. Psikyo games don't have much RNG compared to other shmups, they're all about hard memorization and difficult execution. You should use savestates to learn the patterns without getting frustrated by some lightning fast dense patterns that are impossible to read on the fly. Once you do, figure out the patterns. Are they aimed at you? Figure out the correct tap dodging rhythm, or even misdirect the patterns. Are they static? Memorize an exact route. Is it a combination of the 2 and you have a hard time figuring out which parts are which? Use savestates to stay still on different parts of the screen and see which parts of the patterns change and how, and which remain the same. Work special attacks into your stage routes, helps you quick-kill troublesome enemies. The games tend to give you a lot of bombs too, so plan their use.

The rank climbs back up very quickly after you die, the pattern density is mainly tied to how many power ups you have, that's the tricky part since sometimes dying will give you different slower patterns. Then you'll be underpowered and have a harder time killing enemies, on top of having to dodge power ups as well as bullets. Nobody plays the games that way, there are some rare exceptions where you want to run into a boss to power down but they are so rare that you're lucky if it's viable once per game. Just play the games normally instead of looking for weird tricks that aren't there, or play easier modes until you feel more comfortable with dodging. Pick one or two shmup(s) with good replay value (scoring).
Play one or two hour(s) a day.
If ports or emulation aren't accurate consider buying a PCB.
Consider your monitor setup, is it optimal?
Never EVER join a shmup forum, discord or community. [I found them to be a waste of time].
Save replays of your progress and best runs.
Save replays of top players in your chosen shmup(s) for research.
Practice consciously with specific targets in mind. Ask yourself: "what did I learn or figure out in my last session?". Think about your route, "can I repeat this sequence consistently or is it too risky?". Think about the patterns you're seeing: are they aimed, static, rng, can you manipulate them? tl;dr play thoughtfully.

Do this for a few years and you'll be in the top 1% of shmup players, you'll have a rewarding experience that keeps on giving. You'll have big skills, big scores, and you'll be owning the shmup(s) instead of THEM owning you. You won't become a shut in loser, you won't become a 1cc collecting scrub, and you won't have mental problems like most of the players. You won't waste time on their community drama. Anyone with half a brain will figure this out but I thought I'd save you some time.

Tip: Batrider and Garegga are your friends, don't fear the rank or what you've been told.

Sup. Don't worry about rank at all in Psikyo, yes it goes down when you die but you can't do anything to prevent it from getting high otherwise.
To get started try to beat the first loop of Sengoku Ace without continuing. Then you can either attempt two loops in that game or move on to a different Psikyo game.
This anon knows what's up >>6755685 except that in second loops (except for Sengoku Ace) you will have to deal with randomness.

The thing is that recovery in Psikyo is very punishing so any potential rank tricks are discouraged.
Also, for score the games reward not dying throughout the game and hoarding bombs.
That being said, I have some suicide-related strategies in these games. For instance in Sengoku Ace, if I have no bombs and an extra life entering 2-6 I will suicide at the start where I can quickly regain power, that way I have two bombs to ensure the end.

What carries through games exactly? It's still memory/reaction anyway

>> No.6759834

Compile is shit for learning but movement, panic bombing and pattern reading carry over to some extent while learning/practicing methods and analytical skills carry over perfectly. Patience increases too with time if you are new to the 1cc playstyle, which is very important.

Starting with compile will bore the piss out of him and make him hate the genre. He should start with actually fun shmups like Toaplan's offerings: Hishouzame, Batsugun, Outzone.

>What carries through games exactly?
so many things. things like reading patterns and enemy formations, keeping your eyes on the action instead of staring at your ships'hitbox as you dodge, being able to do precise movements, knowing when to micro and when to macro dodge.

>memory
it's actually a skill, the more you play shmups the better you become at memorizing level layouts and enemy formations. And you'll start thinking in terms of creating a route, instead of just reacting on the fly.

Fun.

Yeah, because no one likes Blazing Lasers, MUSHA and Space Megaforce. No one raves about MUSHA's soundtrack and the longplays on youtube don't have 10s of thousands of views. Space Megaforce hasn't been raved over by snesdrunk. Blazing Lasers isn't a classic entry in the genre. No one has opinions that differ from yours. I didn't actually enjoy those games--I just pretended to like them to anger you.

Especially in terms of port quality, the training options along shits all over Psikyo

That's one of the best shmups you're gonna play. Starting with it will set the bar very high.

Gunbird Gunbird 2 Tengai or Dragon Blaze and the 2 first Strikers are usually in the highest rank of difficulty. for their 2nd loop.
First loop is easier but even then you will need some months to complete them.

If you are a novice, I would Advice to learn some basics by trying your hand on some others games. LIke Un squadron, Raiden fighter Jet or Batsugun.
