I don't know if you could call MP a hidden gem.
I think it's pretty well known.

It might be a little less known overall because it was never released in Europe and Japan at all.

so OP you mean games that are:

1. Unknown to the average game fan
2. Very well known to more knowledgeable and exposed game fans
3. Commonly appear in videos or websites about weird/lesser known games

So what you're looking for is often called "lesser known", but what you're taking offense to is that these games are, to people like us, extremely well known, and so it feels incorrect to say that they are "lesser known" when they are common knowledge to us.

I had this problem a while ago too, as I was trying to explain to people how you refer to a game that is extremely well known to dedicated game fans, but not known much at all to lesser fans or to non-fans. I found that there wasn't any adequate term which demonstrated that it was famous, but only to people involved in the subculture. Pulling from that, it led me to the obvious answer: A new term, which I call "subculture famous" or just "sub-famous", to refer to any game, album, comic, show, etc. that is very well-known to the hardcore fans but is not well known at all outside of their subculture. I find that "subculture famous" helps to clarify a lot of the confusion that can happen when you discuss something that is only common knowledge to uncommon people.

So all that said, a sub-famous game I would recommend for this list is Trip World. Very overhyped, only unknown if you've not been deep in games, and frankly, not very good or interesting, just expensive for being uncommon/overhyped.

why not just use "cult classic" ?

>> No.6757270

>>6757232
because it has "classic" in the name, which is not always accurate. A newer game that is just released and is really popular with hardcores but not with those less into it is not a "cult classic". A "cult classic" is something that was not popular in the beginning but grew popular and respected over time. Usually it stays to a small group hence the "cult" part, but the key point is it has to become old before it can be classic.

Think of it like otaku discussing anime. They'll throw around new running shows like they're common knowledge, and they are, but only in their own subculture. They're not known to others unless they end up becoming popular there. Because the item is famous in a subculture but not famous outside of it, the term "subculture famous" easily captures that idea. You can explain to a non-fan that this show is "subculture famous" and they'll know that while they don't know it, everyone in the subculture does, and it works for new things as well as old things (plus it covers cases where the famous thing is famous for being bad and is thus definitely not a "classic").
