Hot damn, I never thought I'd come across anyone else who'd played these games. Yipe III was awesome -- it expanded so much over the previous games and actually felt a little like a real RPG. Such a timewaster but somehow really charming and fun.

I remember figuring out which chests could give you weapon/armor upgrades and saving them to run through them all at once -- you can reap RIDICULOUS rewards by savescumming the chests and continually getting the next weapon over and over (since they like double in price every time).

How come we never have threads about Escape Velocity, OP? That game was awesome. I have more fond memories of the sequel, EV Override, though; mostly because the universe was bigger and there was more to do in it, especially considering how many parallel plot arcs could be completed on a single pilot file.

I recently stumbled across this forum thread from 2006 where the creator of Override showed up and shared a lot of details about the game's creation and design; it was really mindblowing to me as someone who played the game as a little kid and always assumed that these things were mysteries lost to time.

This game was the best thing on the school computers in 3rd grade. Of course it was only the demo; one of my friends had the full version and I was so fucking jealous.

We used to make up our own levels for it on graph paper in the vain hope that someday a level editor would be available (and also frankly just because making them was fun). Our whole group of friends had a communal folder for storing them all.

Ray's Maze / Another Fine Mess / A Mess of Trouble

The best adventure games I have played. The puzzles are usually pretty logical (the guy who made them does amateur rocketry so he seems like a practical hand's on guy). Stuff like use screwdriver on fuse box cover to open get fuse, go to different area, replace fuse in machine, activate electromagnet, use electromagnet to move heavy chain, etc.

The world is fucking bonkers, with portals that interconnect between all these different dimensions.

I've played these games for hours and hours, but I've never actually finished a single one. They are balls hard.

Nah, I never thought their games were all that obscure. You could find them uploaded to all sorts of sites even though they were just silly little freeware games made by bored teenagers. Their games actually got quite a lot deeper and more polished over time, too. If you were still using OS9 in like 03-04 and got to play their last few releases, you could really see how their output had matured over time.

Off-topic, but I once made a game using one of the tools they used to make their games in (Cocoa or whatever it was called). Cool little puzzle game with simple graphics; I was like 13 years old and had no programming knowledge, so I was pretty proud of it. I could never figure out Klik & Play though.

Ambrosia is bro as hell though. I emailed them yesterday after seeing this thread and asked for my 10+ year old reg codes and they still had all that shit on record. So back to playing Ares, I guess.

i also forgot i bought Cythera, the worst/best ultima vii ripoff ever

Wow, for real? Man, I should do this; I regged all three EV games back in the day and if nothing else I should be able to run Nova on this computer at least, and play the Nova plugins for the other two. They might be registered in my dad's name though, I don't know if that makes a difference.

>i also forgot i bought Cythera, the worst/best ultima vii ripoff ever

I could never figure out what to do in that game; it was just beyond me as a kid even though I was ploughing through other RPGs like Exile and Jewel of Arabia with no problem.

In the first one, all he did was show up from time to time and remind you to pay for your shareware. In the second EV, he robbed your bank account. I don't think he started killing you until Nova.

Oh. My. God.

THIS was the game that was on my second grade teachers Mac that I played the shit out of because I finished the math worksheets in literally under a minute!

OXYD!!! Fuck! I was trying to remember what this was!

What kind of builds are you running? I remember the default party included a character with archery, which was a pretty useless skill; I never had that in my custom parties. I also always made sure to have lots of casters -- usually a mage, a priest, and a mage-priest. I'd give the dual-caster more levels in each school than the default party -- three in mage spells and two in priest spells rather than just two in mage and one in priest. The more people who can cast bless, haste, heal, and fireball, the better.

I also liked to give lots of assassination to the fighters, though I really have no idea what the optimal amount was. I just enjoyed doing double damage all the time and hearing the sound effect.

I was running the default party yeah. It's basically edged fighter, pole fighter, archer, magepriest, mage, priest. I should do my own skill setup.

Still, where the fuck am I supposed to go first if the bandits rape my shit

I don't remember if I ever did the bandits as the very first thing or if I always spent a little while exploring the towns and fighting outdoors. There are some goodies hidden in the towns, as well as a few fights, and the outdoor fights near the towns with goblins and thugs are a pretty easy way to gain a few levels. Still, with proper tactics and the right builds and equipment you could probably do okay against the bandits at level one.

You also don't have to COMPLETE any dungeon just because you start it. Go fight through the first few areas in the bandit fort, then leave and do the bats for a little while, then come back, etc.

Yeah, I don't remember what the deal is with those guys, sorry. I do think you're supposed to leave them alone until later in the game, though.

What was your favorite ship in EV? For me, it'd have to be the Rebel Cruiser. Really puts the Kestrel to shame in terms of power, and I love the way the Manta fighters launch all at once. The Confed Cruiser is more powerful but way too slow to be any fun to fly; the Rebel Cruiser is nice and speedy.

On one of my runs, for some reason the game allowed me to do both the Rebel and the Confed mission strings all the way to completion. One of the Confed missions involves fighting these modified Bulk Freighters that carry Mantas, and they show up from time to time for the rest of the game after you complete the mission. I used the Forklift cheat in this run, and by sheerest coincidence a single forklift strike did precisely the right amount of damage to instantly disable these ships. So after I completed the Rebel missions these guys were friendly, and I was flying around in my Rebel Cruiser instantly disabling them with the forklift whenever they showed up, and all their weapons and fighters would never even be launched. It turns out that unlaunched fighters count as normal weapons that you can steal when you board a ship, and I was taking 4 Mantas from each of these guys whenever I encountered one. I ended up with 64 Mantas on my ship; I could instantly flood the screen with Mantas to the point where new ships wouldn't be able to hyperspace in because the game engine wouldn't allow any more.

but really, I just had a kestrel with as many fucking plasma cannons as I could fit on it

>> No.694950

>>694898
Which were the plasma cannons again? I hardly ever used any guns or turrets aside from the basic green lasers and blue proton cannons; the beefier ones took up so much space and never seemed worth it, though on larger ships they probably more than earn their keep.

I remember there were red ones that I liked, I think they were called neutron blasters or something. There was also the Mass Driver, which I think was a secondary weapon. Really though I always spent most of the game in a Corvette loaded with missiles and shield/maneuverability upgrades. You can do pretty much any mission in a Corvette and I couldn't afford a Kestrel until the end of the game when I could get a Rebel Cruiser instead, so I never used it. It was actually kind of a letdown when I finally tried it out after other players had talked it up so much.

The red ones. Neutron Blasters were from Override.

I traded like crazy before getting a Kestral, did everything in that. Eventually switched sides, worked my way up to doing the Alien levels for the Confederates, and ended the game waltzing around wrecking shit in one of their big capital ships. I think I must have honed my grinding tolerance for WoW on EV trading runs.
