It was a big deal in its time for various reasons
1) It was an N64 Launch title in March 1997 in PAL regions
2) It introduced some cutting edge ideas at its time
3) It was riding on the back of Jurassic Park and 1990s dinosaur craze. Dinosaurs became kind of passe in the 2000s
4) In retrospect it really isnt that good and its draw distance is almost unplayable nowadays (or even pretty shortly afterwards) (N64 games managed to mitigate the worst of the fogging in later titles)
5) Turok 2 and 3 are better games, theyre actually pretty good, though the difficulty curve is just insane. Actually completing Turok 2 without cheats is an impressive feat.

I remember Turok Evolution in 2002 shortly after Xbox and gamecube came out (PAL). You had that in 2002, old tropes still going; a number of 3D platformers came out in 02 (Crash Bandicoot WoC, Vexx, Rayman 4) but they never really caught on. The Mario 64 spell was over, it was passe. Same for dinosaurs, their coolness peaked in the 90s

Debatable based on the draw distance alone. Turok was one of the first games to have skeletal animation though and that was pretty cool. Also texture filtering, if that matters.
But quake had better draw distance and lighting.

Goldeneye gets extra credit for having mission objectives when that was a novelty. Turok has way better combat though. Goldeneye is one those FPS games where literally every enemy is "guy with a gun". And that gets boring after awhile. Fair enough though, you (practically) named three. More than I was aware existed, and at least one is actually made by a zoomie.
Though I've seen a lot of games in this genre get started and then lose track or fade away. So we'll see how many get made. HROT and ASKE seem like they're made by competent people, but fuck, they're so close to being made in the DUSK dev kit that why the fuck even bother.

I doubt there's enough room in the market for people who don't bring anything new or interesting to the table. Turok I never really got into, because I didn't have an N64 until I married into one. It's fine. Something about the gameplay is satisfying. Hits feel solid without feeling chunky if that makes sense. Like when you shoot a monster it feels like soft tissue rather than shooting a meat wall. Quake does an okay job at making your hits feel solid and having effect (monsters staggering, blood, gibs) but the *squish* of hitting soft flesh is somewhere lost.
Someday a retrofps will combine all the best parts of the old games and hopefully add something new. Or not. What the fuck do I know.

It's held back by it's original controls, I personally think. The platforming is leagues harder on 64. The PC rerelease makes it a LOT easier to play. I love the simplicity of it's levels and how you find keys to unlock more levels. It's soundtrack is fucking great (especially Ancient City). The invincibility power up blew my mind when I was a kid and I still find its effect cool today. I know with racial sensitivity being higher than ever these days, and it also has always been kind of eggshell covered ground, but I wish there were more native american starring video games. Goldeneye was a lot more approachable for normalfags. A movie tie in, a well known protagonist, 100% human enemies (and the quirky behaviors tied to them like shooting them in the hand for laughs).
