If you owned a NEO GEO, you would know that these were not good gamepads. The buttons would stop making contact and the clicky stick would drift. It was vastly better to have the joystick, which came with most of the NEO GEOs sold before they tried to cut costs.

The ones with proper microswitches are essentially an arcade stick for your thumb. Excellent for precise inputs and tactile feedback.

It is alright, but takes some getting used to. PDP did make something similar for the 360, as >>6742723 demonstrates, the Retron 5 also has a default controller that has the same kind of D-pad as the PDP pad too. It is possible they did not catch on because it may not suit other types of games on other more popular consoles, so they stuck with what works.

I also do not prefer the default mappings of SNK games in arcades nor the pad. I prefer to remap them to have the punches/slashes on top with kicks on the bottom row from weakest/quickest to strongest/heaviest left to right.

That's exactly why I don play snk games on emulator or any system. It's not the same thing, the stick has phisically 8 directional buttons.
