Do you know that Nintendo 64 accounted for 16% of total 5th gen sales in Europe, 17% in Japan and a whooping 32% in America? Another fun fact: 2 out of 3 Nintendo 64 ever produced were sold in the USA.
That is a strange phenomenon that isn't quite congruent with other generations, what gives?

Games that catered to the market.
Recently i found out that the Saturn outsold the N64 in japan by 350000 units, i always though that the margin was in the million like 6M to the Saturn (which is close to reality at 5750000) and 3M to the N64 but the console sold 5400000, though the Saturn was dead only 3 years after release meanwhile the N64 stop production around 6 years after release.

Let us not forget that MSRP N64 launched at in Japan was 25000 yen, compared to Saturn's 44800 yen.

>First console was a SNES
>Sega bad, no Saturn for me.
>Sony? The Walkman guys? Ha.
>Easy choice.

I'm glad I had it at the time but I didn't get to experience all the cool Playstation 1 games until PS3. Bless those niggas cramming RE2 on a cart for me though so I got to be apart of the "cultural discussion" on that one when it was new.

Does anyone cast new n64 shells?

I was reading about it, the Saturn got most of its sales from 1994-1997, by 1998 it was basically done early in the year before the Dreamcast was even around to replace it. The console basically stopped moving units in any measurable quantity. PS1 took all of its momentum with games like FF7. N64's games just didn't appeal to the Japanese, it's so weird as an American hearing that when it debuted with Mario 64 - Mario landed with a thud.

I knew I could talk my parents into one console and that was the one I was stuck with so the N64 seemed like a safe choice.

As a fan of platformers this was my favorite console at the time but in retrospect I think I would have been a lot happier with the Playstation. Nintendo had two really high quality platformers but only a handful of okay ones, while PS1 just had a gold mine of good ones. I'm glad I finally dropped the brand loyalty bullshit and decided to check out other console's offerings.

how bad is the mame/mess emulator for the N64 now? I'd love to play some of these games again, but don't have the real console.

why the fuck would you use MAME for anything other than arcade games or ancient obscure consoles

>> No.6742431

>>6742423
Because it exists, installs on anything, and I'm familiar with it. If there's a better option, I'm all ears.

>> No.6742443

>>6742431
As a friendly suggestion, MAME isn't really a good option for consoles, specially the most popular ones, and basically anything from the 90s. It even has a lot of inaccuracies for SNES.

While generally I am not a fan of it, the best option for N64 emulation is using retroarch. You don't need to fuck around with plugins shit and works pretty well right out of the gate

Thanks. I just tried it (it included it's encapsulated version of mupen64plus), and it was almost playable on my laptop. Went ahead and tried mame then, just to see. It went from almost playable to downright painful.

Guess I need a newer/better laptop. Oh well.

and yet people talk about it constantly

I think it's because of the multiplayer. Americans had big TVs and they loved to play local multiplayer games. With 4 or 5 people we were OK to take turns playing Tekken or Soul Edge, but if there are 7 people, it's gonna take too long for people to get a turn. Time for Smash, Mario Kart, even Forsaken, something like that.

I also played some 4 player games on PSX using the multitap, like Crash Bash, but most people didn't have that or even know it existed. They knew the n64 had 4 controller ports and the ps1 had 2. And the saturn if they had ever heard of it lol.

>> No.6747160

In the 1990s, American public perception assumed that video games were for kids, not manchildren. So the best selling games would have been arcadish styke games and 3d platformers targeted to the 6-12 demographic.

>> No.6747164

>>6747160
Truthfully there's many more games that can be classified as arcadish on Saturn or PS1 than it is on the N64.
